Rep. Mac Thornberry becomes sixth Texas Republican in House to announce retirement ahead of 2020

Source: Dallas News

The Texodus continues.

Clarendon Rep. Mac Thornberry on Monday announced that he will not run for reelection next year, making the 13-term lawmaker the sixth Texas Republican in Congress to head for the exits ahead of the 2020 election.

"We are reminded, however, that 'for everything there is a season,' and I believe that the time has come for a change," he said in a news release, saying that it's been a "great honor" to serve the people of his district. "Therefore, I will not be a candidate for reelection in the 2020 election."

His retirement marks a heavyweight loss for a state GOP delegation in flux. The Panhandle native, elected to the U.S. House in 1994, is one of the longest-tenured Texans in Washington from either party. He's spent the last three terms as the top Republican on the powerful House Armed Services Committee, serving as chairman for two of those terms.

9. +12 is no longer a total lock. A big blue wave could possibly turn it.

At the very least Republicans are going to have to put some resources into defending it.

18. Greg Sagan

He will run again for this seat. Mac won by default because no one votes in the panhandle of Texas. Amarillo has over 200k people and only 60k voted last year. 20k for Beto and 60k for Cruz

19. Sadly, probably

There's probably going to be a republican primary for Thornberry's seat, at least. That's going to increase voter turnout, which will bring in the money. That pisses me off because, with the right campaign (county-to-county over and over again, like Beto) a good Democrat could beat them. But will the DNC/DCCC lift a finger to help that candidate? No.

So there we are.

Good, I am glad repugs are miserable!!

With Pelosi in charge, the job is miserable. And besides: “They’re tired of Trumpism,” says a former Republican operative. “They’re doing a calculation, ‘Is it worth it?’ And they’ve decided no.”

8. Quite revealing, isn't it?

It shows not only how feeble they are but also how little they care about public service. They can't bear to face their constituents or actually work hard to win votes. And if they can't be in charge, they have no interest in representing their constituents at all.

17. So basically

They can't handle the heat if someone is there with a different idea on how to do things. Typical Republican Snowflakes. They want congress to be like AM Radio, just bloviate their extreme non-sense with no push back.

14. NO GOP seat is "safe", not with dynamics in place

a few GOP/trump voters decide supporting a GOP that could or would nail tump to wall not to vote is all it takes to fuel the largest change of power ever.
