Trump's EU ambassador to testify after Democrats' subpoena

Source: The Hill

A key witness in House Democrats' ongoing impeachment inquiry will testify next week despite the State Department's objection.

Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland will testify before the House on Thursday, October 17, in compliance with a congressional subpoena, according to his counsel.

"Notwithstanding theState Department’s current direction to not testify, Ambassador Sondland will honor the Committees’ subpoena, and he looks forward to testifying on Thursday," according to a statement from Sondland's attorneys Robert Luskin and Kwame Manley.

Sondland had been set to testify earlier this week, but his appearance was abruptly blocked by the State Department. The White House the same day said it would no longer cooperate with the impeachment inquiry.

Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, said Friday that he will testify on Thursday before House committees leading the impeachment inquiry even though the Trump administration has directed him not to testify. But Sondland said he doesn't control the disposition of documents that the committees have directed him to produce, adding that the State Department has sole authority to produce the documents and he hopes it shares them with the committees before Thursday. On Tuesday, Trump escalated his fight against House Democrats' impeachment inquiry by blocking Sondland from testifying about dealings with Ukraine.

All those gaps in text messages -- when he was consulting with his own attorney and Trump. Will be interesting to see how he spins it -- whether he's all in for Trump -- or throws him under the bus. If he won't share ALL of his texts and WhatsApp communications, then he's spinning.
