Turkey steps up Syria offensive against Kurds in spite of Trump's warnings

Source: CBS News

Dohuk, Iraq — Dismissing warnings from President Donald Trump and the imposition of economic sanctions, Turkey's leader has defended his attack on America's former Kurdish allies in northern Syria and insisted he will push on with the offensive until his government's "objectives have been achieved." Turkey considers the Kurdish militias who helped the U.S. defeat ISIS in Syria to be terrorists, and for years Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has wanted to push them back from his southern border, deeper into Syrian territory.

As CBS News correspondent Charlie D'Agata reported on Tuesday, it may be hard to hear Mr. Trump's demands for a ceasefire over the deafening explosions on the battlefields of northern Syria.

Despite growing international pressure to bring an end to the violence, Erdogan's forces have, if anything, stepped up their military campaign to grab land before advancing Syrian regime forces arrive to retake key Kurdish cities.

On Mr. Trump's orders, the roughly 1,000 American forces who had operated for years in northern Syria, effectively shielding the Kurds from a Turkish offensive, have been ordered out, leaving the U.S. military largely out of the picture.

Trump won't be able to put this genie back in the bottle. Pence's trip to the ME will end in humiliation. Russia is already using our abandoned sites to stage operations. This is idiocy on a historic scale.

And this is all pr and smoke and mirrors because he's looked at now as failing dramatically turning his back on allies to be murdered now. This is another example of how trump can never be trusted, and this promotion of sanctions is a fraud, and more lies from trump. Putin wanted this, and again trump is helping Putin and Russia, and again helping ISIS. Helping these people is the opposite of making America great again, it's weakening us, and we won't be trusted after trump did this. This is like trump did with Kim, then allowed him to build up a nuclear arsenal, it makes us a lot more unsafe and Putin knows that.

NATO and the rest of the non-Putin run governments of the world will begin applying very heavy pressure on Turkey unless, by the time they decide what kind of pressure, the disaster to the Kurds is already a fait accompli. Once the Kurds are massacred and the Turks have control of that area of Syria, economic sanctions will be meaningless simply because such sanctions cannot reverse time and un-do what Erdogan has already accomplished.

Trump did this. Any GOP sycophant who pretends otherwise needs to be attacked in the press and by the Democratic Party relentlessly. Anyone who votes for someone who was OK with this abandonment of an ally should never be allowed to insult America by standing for the Anthem or pledging allegiance to its flag.
