Energy Secretary Rick Perry, 1 of the '3 amigos' on Ukraine, resigns

Source: ABC News

Energy Secretary Rick Perry, described by colleagues as one of the "three amigos" on U.S. policy on Ukraine, informed President Donald Trump on Thursday that he plans to resign, according to two senior administration officials with direct knowledge of the matter.

A day of departure has not been determined. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not provide an immediate explanation on why he was leaving.

Perry, who was Texas' longest serving governor and ran against Trump for president in 2016 before joining his administration, has not been accused of any wrongdoing. He also has insisted that actions he took regarding Ukraine were intended to advance U.S. interests in the region – namely addressing government corruption and encouraging American companies to do business there.

In recent weeks, Perry has repeatedly knocked down suggestions that he planned to resign, including telling the Wall Street Journal in an interview published Wednesday that he planned to still be in the job on Thanksgiving.

The first time I ever saw that cinematic metaphor applied to one of their schemes, was when Poppy Bush's Trade Representative Carla Hills led negotiations over NAFTA with her Canadian and Mexican counterparts.

And we all know what came of that:

An ongoing economic train wreck (for the U.S.) that - on top of all the shuttered factories and job losses - helped elect Cheeto!

House Democrats subpoena Energy Secretary Rick Perry

By Matthew Daly?|?AP
Oct. 10, 2019 at 7:13 p.m. EDT

WASHINGTON — House Democrats subpoenaed Energy Secretary Rick Perry on Thursday as part of their impeachment investigation into President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine. The chairmen of the House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Oversight committees sent Perry a subpoena asking him to provide documents related to a Ukrainian state-owned energy company as well as his involvement in a July call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The lawmakers set a deadline for Oct. 18.

Trump has said Perry teed up the July 25 call, in which Trump pressed Ukraine to investigate his Democratic rival Joe Biden and his son, who was employed by a Ukrainian gas company.

Shaylyn Hynes, a spokeswoman for Perry, has said he wanted Trump to speak with the Ukrainian leader on energy matters related to U.S. efforts to boost Western energy ties to Eastern Europe. It is part of a long-term effort to lessen the political control Russia wields through its dominance of the fuel supply.

“Recently, public reports have raised questions about any role you may have played in conveying or reinforcing the president’s stark message to the Ukrainian president,” the three Democratic chairmen wrote. “These reports have also raised significant questions about your efforts to press Ukrainian officials to change the management structure at a Ukrainian state-owned energy company to benefit individuals involved with Rudy Giuliani’s push to get Ukrainian officials to interfere in our 2020 election.” Hynes said the Energy Department received a letter from the committees and is reviewing it.

The question will be is whether he turns over at least some stuff by tomorrow or blows it off like the rest of them.
