For the second week in a row, Jane Fonda has been arrested while protesting climate change. Her "Grace and Frankie" co-star Sam Waterston was also present at the Washington, D.C., protest and placed under arrest.
A Twitter account for Fire Drill Fridays, an initiative which aims to have politicians address climate change, tweeted at 10:45 a.m. Friday morning that Fonda, 81, was "walking to the US Capitol to demand a #greeennewdeal." With several following her, Fonda was bundled up in a long red coat and wore a black hat.
"Scientists tell us the tipping point for catastrophe is only 11 years off," Fonda says in a video clip with the United States Capitol in the background. "But there is still time if we move quickly and ambitiously to prevent the worst impacts, by beginning the transition off fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy now."
In a letter shared to Fire Drill Friday's website, Fonda said she's "moved to Washington, D.C. to be closer to the epicenter of the fight for our climate." She added: "Every Friday through January, I will be leading weekly demonstrations on Capitol Hill to demand that action by our political leaders be taken to address the climate emergency we are in. We can't afford to wait. "Welcome to Fire Drill Fridays."

Nothing WE do here will affect climate change because of all the other countries who pollute at far higher levels. We are already FAR more efficient than we were even 20 yrs ago. Its just like plastic; 90% of ocean plastic comes from TEN rivers in Asia & Africa. Passing a bunch of plastic bans here does nothing to alleviate that. Doesnt mean we shouldn't recycle, but we should be realistic about what we can actually accomplish.
And this "green new deal" will never happen so why would i waste my time on it? I'd rather campaign for candidates who actually DO have a chance

(2,227 posts)Or, we could just not do shit because it is too late. If you are really serious about being cynical, in the end, one way or another, we are going to do ourselves in. So let's just get it over with and do ourselves in NOW.
I think I want to be with those who will make an effort. Maybe it will have "the butterfly effect".
Kudos to Jane and Sam. They know that publicity is good for the cause. They don't need it for themselves.
I have ALWAYS been a fan of Jane, from the beginning. I saw her at Graham Pond, on the University of Florida campus in 1971 protesting the Vietnam war.
Yes, she may have made some poor decisions in her photo ops, but her heart has ALWAYS been in the right place.

(29,322 posts)They constantly talk about the Chinese when it comes to climate change. Well Greta pointed out that the country she is from uses the same argument -- why should we do anything when the USA pollutes more?

(12,533 posts)I deal with the real world as it is. The atmosphere doesnt have borders. China is slated to build 100s of coal fired pwr plants over the next decade. And India's output of greenhouse gasses is increasing even faster than China's.
Only a recession will truly slow down ALL emissions. The US is increasing wind & solar, but transportation output is up because the economy isnt receding (yet). And what does it take to build the new generation of batteries & other climate friendly power sources? Rare earth minerals.
Where does the power come from to recharge the millions of electric cars?
Unless nuclear is part of the solution, its all just a fantasy. But its the celebrity cause, so everyone wants to be seen as a part of it

(29,322 posts)Again Greta Thunberg is from a smaller country than the US and they point out why should we do anything when the USA pollutes more. So the argument you are making, other countries make the same argument about US.
I wouldn't say you are using GOP talking points if you weren't. Maybe Greta's answer is not as popular to you?

(12,533 posts)If you're bailing water and there's still a hole in the boat, you're getting nowhere.
Greta can blame whoever and whatever she wants, fine. Maybe she'd do well to protest in China or India.

The US is and has been changing appliances, vehicles, construction, production, etc, to help reduce emissions. And we'll continue to do so.

A bunch of editorial tripe, meaningless without evidence to support as anything other than what they are.
Have at it. With the civility you ask of others yet deny yourself.

Seems like the others who posted knew exactly what I was talking about. They just didn't agree with it; which is fine.
