Trump claims he's the victim of 'phony emoluments clause'
Source: Politico
President Donald Trump on Monday claimed he's receiving unfair scrutiny because of the "phony emoluments clause," as he defended his prior decision to host next year's G-7 summit at his Doral resort in Miami.
Trump over the weekend reversed himself and canceled plans to hold the meeting of world leaders at his property after numerous critics questioned whether the move would violate a Constitutional clause that forbids a president from profiting from foreign governments or receiving any money from the U.S. government except his or her annual salary.
You people with this phony emoluments clause, Trump said has he took questions from reporters during a Cabinet meeting.
The president was defensive of his initial decision, asserting that hosting the G-7 summit at the Trump National Doral Miami resort would have saved taxpayer money because he would have done it for free. Trump blamed the reversal of his decision on Democrats and the media for invoking the emoluments clause as they questioned its legality.

(6,917 posts)These people are anarchists---the want to destroy the U.S. government and replace it with a patchwork of corporate, private companies carrying out the function of the people's government. Or nothing at all.
But first, they must destroy the U.S. Government. Then, they think they will rebuild "from the ground up" with the help of greedy businesspeople and Jeebus.
Even Jeebus thinks they are morons.

Proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance.
I had a Master Chief that recited this to us daily. Then he'd say, "Now, go have a fine NAVY day."

(24,329 posts)That's one of the places he's looking at now -- according to what I've read
What he eaves out, is that his club would have had to have been renovated for the G-7
That would have been on the taxpayers

(285 posts)You and i know the laws should be applied fairly, even to the President. But so far he has gotten away with flaunting law, custom, and precedent.
So far the Republican Congressional, or at least Senate, Majority has allowed him to get away with these egregious breaches. And honestly, I do not see them making him pay for his misbehaviour by removing him from office.
That will likely come down to the US electorate.
He thinks he can get away with anything, and so far he has.
I would love to see Congress pass laws that put specific statutory limits and requirements on presidential behaviours and powers. But it will take a reasonable, far-sighted president to sign them.
I would love to see the current democratic candidates address that issue directly.
