Impeachment witnesses detail smear campaign against Ukraine ambassador

Marie Yovanovitch, who was recalled as U.S. ambassador to Ukraine in the spring, and Michael McKinley, a former Pompeo adviser, described deepening concern that foreign policy had been infected by officials seeking to boost Trumps domestic political standing in part by pressuring Ukraines government to investigate his Democratic opponents.
I was disturbed by the implication that foreign governments were being approached to procure negative information on political opponents, McKinley, who resigned in part because the State Department wouldnt issue a statement of support for Yovanovitch, told investigators.
In the Foreign Service at embassies, we have to leave politics in the United States, Yovanovitch told investigators. I mean, we represent all Americans. We represent our policy.
Transcripts of Yovanovitchs and McKinleys interviews with impeachment investigators were released Monday, the first such documents made public by lawmakers leading the probe.
