Romney: My campaign doesn't need a turnaround

Source: CBS

-snip-

Pelley's interview with Romney is part of a 60 Minutes focus on the 2012 presidential campaign. President Obama will also appear on 60 Minutes Sunday in a separate interview with Steve Kroft.

A transcript of the excerpt follows:

Scott Pelley: You are slipping in the polls at this moment. A lot of Republicans are concerned about this campaign. You bill yourself as a turnaround artist. How are you going to turn this campaign around?

Mitt Romney: Well, actually, we're tied in the polls. We're all within the margin of error. We bounce aroun -- week to week-- day to day. There are some days we're up. There are some days we're down. We go forward with my message, that this is a time to reinvigorate the American economy, not by expanding government and raising taxes on people, but instead by making sure government encourages entrepreneurship and innovation and gets the private sector hiring again.

Scott Pelley: Governor, I appreciate your message very much. But that wasn't precisely the question. You're the CEO of this campaign. A lot of Republicans would like to know, a lot of your donors would like to know, how do you turn this thing around? You've got a little more than six weeks. What do you do?

Mitt Romney: Well, it doesn't need a turnaround. We've got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States.

Scott Pelley: Well-- as you know, a lot of people were concerned about the video of the fundraiser in which you talked about the 47 percent of the American people who don't pay taxes. Peggy Noonan, a very well-known conservative columnist, said that it was an example of this campaign being incompetent. And I wonder if any of that criticism gets through to you and whether you're concerned about it at all, whether--

Mitt Romney: Well, that's not--

Scott Pelley: --the concerns of Republicans--

Mitt Romney: That's not...that's not the campaign. That was me, right? I-- that's not a campaign.

Scott Pelley: You are the campaign--

Mitt Romney: I've got a very effective campaign. It's doing a very good job. But not everything I say is elegant. And I want to make it very clear, I want to help 100 percent of the American people.

to keep the rest on board the Titanic.

The $200K bonus kept his remaining staff intact for another month or so. He'll probably shower the rest of the campaign funds on them to keep them on the final 2 weeks before they all go down together.

That's how they do it in his biz. When they realize they've skuttled another one, they grab the monies and bail.

As Romney says 47% will vote for Obama no matter what, there must be at least 40% who would vote for any Republican Presidential candidate just because of the big R. I try to give the truth to my friends and all over internet message boards. Of course, this is mostly useless because on some boards, people just give "thumbs down" no matter what you say even if you appear to be leaning left. The hate machine they are running is absolutely ridiculous.

I've been a Democrat ever since I was a 9 year old watching the 2000 stolen election. I was the only Gore supporter in my class and I never backed down from my beliefs, and never have since. My conservative parents are too apathetic to vote, but I did at least get my mom to "support" Obama in 2008. I do want to do more, I'm just not sure where to start/

DU strikes me as something beyond just a website or a blog - it's a think tank!

If you spend a little bit of time here, reading and checking out some of the links and commentaries and "Good Reads" and other stuff, you will be ASTOUNDED at how much you will learn! How your mind will expand! How much better-armed and equipped you'll be to take on others around you who get their talking points directly from Pox Noise.

Just hang around and absorb. You'll get ideas. You'll hear stories - inspirational ones and cautionary tales. Success stories, for example, about those DUers who've managed to complain to a local store or bank about ALWAYS airing Pox on their in-store monitors - and gotten the channel changed; or how somebody in their office/class/shop/checkout line/etc was finally reached and eyes were opened, and the truth finally was able to break through to them. You'll see those here all the time. You'll see great slogans and bumper stickers and clever phrasing and meme-scheming that are memorable and engaging and worth sharing - to be "said, read, and spread!" You'll learn about approaches, techniques, and phrasings that work as well as those that don't. You'll gain from others' accomplishments here and learn from their mistakes. You'll get LOTS of history and background info from people here, both through the links they post to buttress their arguments AND their own anecdotal testimony from their own lives - especially the veterans here and the older DUers who can remember back through maybe a dozen Presidents' terms! That perspective is PRICELESS and will expand your own understanding and your growing mastery of facts. AND you'll have a chance to "eavesdrop" on some of the finest, most nimble-minded, and shrewd debaters - literally world class.

Best of all: you'll get a sense of solidarity that there are LOTS of people who feel as you do, and see things as you do, and recognize truths and lies as you do. It will help keep you fired up when you're on a roll and reassure you when something concerns or outrages or bewilders you, or brings you down. You'll discover you are FAR from being alone. Our side is gaining ground by the day!

Glad you're here!
