what? He's named in the impeachment report as a co-conspirator (my words) and he's suing CNN for accusing him of being a co-conspirator (my words) Boy he's taken lessons from the sociopath-in-chief himself..

Does he keep a database of lawsuits? How can he remember which is which?

New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254 (1964), was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the freedom of speech protections in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution restrict the ability of American public officials to sue for defamation.

No, the best bet might simply be to let Nunes screw this up on his own.

It has a two page discussion of Nunes as a party including his history and references to a book he wrote. There are a large number of twitter posts in this petition
I have not seen a petition like this

(115,947 posts)He specializes in suing media outlets for defamation on behalf of right-wing clients - notwithstanding NY Times v. Sullivan - SLAPP suits, maybe? He's been suspended twice, once for a year (https://www.vsb.org/docs/Biss_11-26-08.final.pdf) and once for 30 days for violating the terms of his suspension, and was also reprimanded for violating conflict of interest rules. https://www.fresnobee.com/news/politics-government/politics-columns-blogs/article229024314.html
That is truly the weirdest complaint I've ever seen that was produced by an actual lawyer. You'd expect to see something like that from a pro se plaintiff who's suing the government for spying on him through radio transmitters in his fillings.

(145,794 posts)I agree that this petition looks like it was drafted by a lay person. The concept that you spend two pages describing Nunes in the parties section of the pleading is a dead giveaway that a non-lawyer wrote part of this petition.
Yes, I know that the so-called lawyer in this case has been suspended. This idiot committed some sort of securities fraud which should have gotten him jail time. Given the quality of his work product, this guy should be disbarred
It has been my experience that federal judges are not tolerant of this type of lawsuit

(115,947 posts)and signed his name, kind of like Trump's goofy doctor signed his name to that letter attesting to Trump's spectacularly good health - a letter that, it turns out, Trump dictated. I expect to hear that this lawyer might be in trouble again over this; at least, he ought to be. A judge would cut a pro se party a little slack but any lawyer who signs his name to this sort of dreck is just asking for an ass-kicking.

In promoting fake news about secret meetings in Vienna with a corrupt former Ukraine prosecutor, CNN pandered to lurid curiosity, the complaint said. CNN is the mother of fake news. It is the least trusted name. CNN is eroding the fabric of America, proselytizing, sowing distrust and disharmony. It must be held accountable.....
He added that its possible he has spoken with Parnas but that he doesnt really recall the mans name and has not gone through his records.
We have Americans and foreigners contacting us every single day with information on the House Intelligence Committee, he said.
According to Nunes, CNN published the defamatory statements with two goals: to harm his reputation and cause him to be removed from the impeachment inquiry.
CNN harbors an institutional hatred, extreme bias, spite and ill-will toward [Nunes], the GOP and President Trump, the lawsuit claimed.
Here is a link to the actual petition https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/nunes-cnn.pdf This is a very strange petition with a ton of twitter quotes and puffery. This was filed by the same attorney suing the twitter cow who has issues

(145,794 posts)The other lawsuits filed against the fictional cow and twitter are evidently in Virginia state court and the judge in these cases has not dismissed these cases. Federal judges are not going to be as tolerant

dont think CNN is too worried about Devins lawsuit.
Even the Wall Street Journal is raising their eyebrows over Nunes
The phone records suggest Mr. Giulianis deep involvement in several key episodes that have become a focus of the impeachment probe. The frequent contacts between Mr. Nunes and two figures at the center of the inquiryMr. Giuliani and one of his indicted associatesare highly unusual and likely to renew calls from Democrats for Mr. Nunes to face an ethics inquiry.
