Speaker Pelosi invites President Trump to deliver State of the Union on February 4
Source: CNN
Washington (CNN)House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has invited President Donald Trump to deliver the State of the Union address on February 4, 2020.
"In the spirit of respecting our Constitution, I invite you to deliver your State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 in the Chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives," Pelosi wrote in a letter addressed to the President dated Friday.
The invitation from Pelosi comes just days after the House of Representatives took the historic step of voting to impeach Trump, a move that has led to an escalation of partisan tensions on Capitol Hill.
This story is breaking and will be updated.

(2,431 posts)1) More time to ensure a fair trial... with witness testimony allowed (it currently isn't)
2) More time for the don to make a fool of him self like at his rally the other night, where even his own supporters stood in shocked silence.
3) Rack up additional articles of impeachment.

(2 posts)PELOSI IS A BRILLIANT STAGIEST. OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT, SHE IS PROJECTING INTEGRITY BY THE INVITATION. AS DEMOCRATS WE NEED TO FOLLOW SUIT, SHOW INTELLIGENCE WITHOUT BRAGGING AS WELL AS BE HUMBLE FOR STANDING UP TO WHAT IS RIGHT.

(194 posts)I admire Speaker Pilosi's leadership, but reckon it is an egregious mistake to reward Trump with the golden opportunity to trash all his Democratic Party "enemies" while the Democrats will need to sit in polite silence and listen to this impeached "clear and present danger" to America spewing out lunatic lies and attacks upon the Democratic Party Members just as though this is another of his campaign rally rants.
Think of what Paul Ryan would have done if he was still Speaker and Hillary Clinton was being impeached for "emails" or "Benghazi" or any other nonsensical accusations the Republicans could invent to impeach her for.
The actual State of the Union is one of existential peril due to Trump's and the Republican Party's betrayal of their oaths of office to preserve and protect the Constitution. They are diabolically demolishing the rule of law, but are still rewarded by a Democratic Party House leadership which I propound is seriously misreading the exasperation of its grass roots with the gifting of this invitation to Trump.

(42,702 posts)First, he could contrast his treatment with that of Clinton, who was invited to deliver his SOTU in 1999 while his impeachment trial was ongoing.
Second, he would then schedule a rally with an arena of adoring MAGATs at which he would deliver his state of the union address with live network coverage.
