(63,209 posts)I was going to be acutely ungracious, but I'll keep it to myself in light of Imus' moment of reflection.

(1,242 posts)I would think 'pick on' implies something less of a challenge than 'provoking'. In other words, one can 'provoke' someone of lesser strength or greater strength. 'Pick on' to me implies going after someone of lesser strength. These conservatives have difficulty finding the correct words because their thinking doesn't reflect 'political correctness'. The only ones afraid of coming as prejudice are those who are prejudiced in thinking. People should notice more that progressive thinkers don't fear political correctness or coming off as prejudiced because the progressive mind is not prejudiced like that.

(67,782 posts)....but then, maybe 20 years or so ago (about 10 years before the "nappy headed hos" incident?) he underwent a strange transformation. Got mean, nasty, and very political. I couldn't take him anymore.
But in his prime he was great.
I'm actually surprised he lived to be 79, over the years he had serious problems with substance abuse and wasn't very healthy.

One of the nation's original and most notorious shock jocks, Imus had two memorable stints in Cleveland. The first started in 1970 at WGAR-AM/1220 and lasted barely a year. It was a tumultuous year. WGAR shot to No. 1 in the ratings, as Imus peppered the airwaves with a seemingly drunken flurry of sexually and politically provocative material. When he left in 1971 for the big-time in New York, the headline in The Plain Dealer read: "Garbage mouth goes to Gotham." He shot to stardom in the Big Apple, serving up the same shock schtick. But drug and alcohol abuse, violent episodes and other bizarre behavior got him fired eventually and he headed back to Cleveland, this time to work as the afternoon-drive host at WHK. The even more vile Gary Dee did mornings. Imus was back to New York the following year and eventually built an "Imus in the Morning" media empire that had him syndicated across the country. He got fired from CBS from that gig in 2007 after making racist and insulting remarks about the Rutgers women's basketball team. But he was soon back on the air with a new deal, and currently broadcasts from a base at WABC in New York. (Plain Dealer file photo)

(160,527 posts)I will never forget him just as he was, mocking Bill Clinton, as he sat beside Hillary, at the White House Correspondents' diiiner, and she had to hear how blatantly she was betrayed and how funny Imus thought it all was. He didn't forget to make fun of her, too, personally before he finished his "comedy" bit on C-Span, while blaming the fact everyone already knew everything about the affair because the corporate media was wallowing it it endlessly.
