The Wheels Fall Off for Romney as Obama Leads with NASCAR Fans, 48%-41%

Last edited Sun Sep 23, 2012, 10:15 PM - Edit history (2)

Source: Politics USA

According to a new Zogby Poll the wheels are close to coming off the Romney campaign. President Obama leads Mitt Romney among NASCAR fans, 48%-41%.

The Zogby poll http://www.jzanalytics.com/DATA/Crosstabs_Voters_2way_and_5way_horserace_092112 that President Obama has a seven point lead over Mitt Romney among likely voters, 48%-41%, and even larger nine point lead when all candidates are included, 49%-40%. The real shocker is that the poll found the president doing very well with some traditionally thought of Republican voting blocs.

Obama leads in almost every region of the country, and only trailed Romney by six points in the South, 41%-47%. Among voters who shop at Wal-Mart on a weekly basis, Romney’s lead is within the poll’s 3.4% margin of error, 45%-42%. Obama leads with voters who are or who have a family member in the military, 54%-39%. Most surprisingly, Obama only trails Romney by seven points with those who consider themselves born again Christians, 40%-47%. The president also leads with NASCAR fans, 48%-41%.

Romney’s problems with NASCAR fans could go back to when he mocked them while attending the Daytona 500 this year. The New York Times reported Romney’s Daytona experience in the most classic of ways, “But the crowd initially booed Mr. Romney, who occasionally struck a discordant note, as when he approached a group of fans wearing plastic ponchos. ‘I like those fancy raincoats you bought,’ he said. ‘Really sprung for the big bucks.’ And when asked if he was a fan of the sport, he mentioned that ‘I have some great friends who are Nascar team owners.’”

UPDATE TO ADD:

Obama has a 14 point lead among independents (46% to 32%), 33 points among moderates (60% to 27%), 36 points among 18-29 year olds (65%-29%), 11 points among 30-49 year olds (48% to 37%), and is down among 50-64 year olds by only 2 points (45%-47%) and 3 points among voters over 65 (44%-47%). The President maintains his huge leads among Hispanics (68% to 26%) and African American voters (93%-0%).

Romney’s lead is only 50% to 39% among white voters and 48% to 40% among evangelicals. Obama continues his lead among NASCAR fans (49% Obama to 42% Romney).

I won’t say that things are spinning out of control for Romney, but I can say that things are not spinning in control. He is off message, losing ground, not connecting with his own base, being severely chastised (and even dismissed) by GOP pundits who should be his friends. There are ups and downs in presidential campaigns. For Romney, this is a real down.

All kinds of folks at NHRA events; gear heads, hippies (I was an addict to drags in the late 60s/early 70s), women, even some blacks.

I do miss the old Daytona 500s (64, 70, 84, etc.), esp. the early days when those huge-displacement engines revved up coming off the final turn toward the green flag. The crowd roared. And you couldn't hear them. I remember (1970) A. J. Foy's engine blowing up in front of us in the old Barney Oldfield Grandstand. Smoke squirted out both sides of the hood, conveniently before Pit Road. Everyone was laughing.

There's a whole lot of Blacks, Latinos, and women in professional drag-racing. And Asians are really into the fwd compacts - some are getting over 1000 hp from little turbocharged and nitrous injected 4 cylinders motors.

when in open competition, somebody from Dothan (?), Alabama entered a finely tuned straight-8 Oldsmobile (late 40s), and managed to defeat the competition, all the way up through sportsman modified, and had $9,000 in the pocket. Everyone was on their collective feet when he got the green light on a epoch-long handicap. But before the other car went green, and right in front of the main grandstand, there was a loud *CLUNK* and jagged metal opened up under the engine, and out dangled a connecting rod, followed by vast, gulping gouts of oil. He rolled to a stop to a standing ovation and huge laughter. Took several pounds of sawdust and many passes by cars to clean up that oil spill. I think he made quite a bit of dough that day!

Crew chiefs who have struck out on their own as car owners - they do 1 race sponsorships all the time.

I'd love to see a commercial where a limo pulls up. The driver's window rolls down, and a NASCAR driver (Tony or Junior, someone with a pirate's demeanor!) says "Where to, Mr. President?" "Forward, Tony, and step on it!" A quick frame of The Prez stepping in (maybe with Joe B. and./or "the ladies&quot A "Man in Black" speaks "Green! Green! If Detroit were to have gone bankrupt, that would have ruined NASCAR because most of the drivers prefer American cars.

The Yates and Roush shops worked closely with Ford in designing the new Ford motor, for example. The casting and forging of the parts is likely outsourced, but I don't know where. The actual assembly is done in the teams' engine shops. Most of the small teams buy engines from the big teams, ex: Tony Stewart's team buys their motors from Hendrick.
A friend of mine has a 421 cubic inch motor in his '55 Chevy drag car that is based on the Chevy NASCAR motor. No parts are interchangeable with any production motor, and he even had to have the exhaust headers custom made.

That polling firm is even more unreliable than the House of Ras -- so much that 538.com doesn't include their results -- even if the slant is the opposite (for example, the day before the 2004 election, they predicted a comfortable win for Kerry; and, before you make the obvious objection, even though the EC may have been stolen that year in Ohio, the fact remains that Dubya won the popular vote).

Seriously, the Zogby result is entertaining, but I wouldn't bet the house, or even the doghouse, on it.

In NASCAR we not only follow our favorite driver but, often, our favorite brand of car. If our guy drops out of the race we look for another driver in the same make of car and cheer for him.

Romney would have been perfectly happy to let half the manufacturers in NASCAR go out of business. And the fans know this.
