Romney tells Iowa voters he’ll ‘just have to come down hard’ on Obama in debates
Source: Des Moines Register
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told Iowans in a telephone conference call tonight that hell have to come down hard on President Obama in the upcoming debates about claims in campaign advertising.
-snip-
Romney thanked Stan for bringing the ads to his attention, as if he hadnt heard about them.
So I appreciate, Stan, your making me aware of those ads. I know our team, our campaign team sees what he has out there but we may need to go out there and refute what he is saying, Romney said, referring to President Obama.
Of course, I get the chance in the debate to do that as well. Hell probably reiterate some of those arguments and those statements and Ill just have to come down hard and say, Mr. President, you know thats not true. And you hope to see something better than that from the person whos serving as president of the United States,
Romney said.

Good article from the Register's political columnist, Kathie Obradovich.
Romney told "Stan from Sioux City" that he would "have no cut whatsoever in funding or changes in programs for either Social Security or Medicare." This followed Romney telling "Betty from Marshalltown, who said she was in a nursing home, that there'd be no changes for her, but changes for younger people.
The first questions came from "Doug in Dubuque" who said he was a Teamster and a Romney backer, but wanted more details about what Romney would do.
Romney's answer to that was to tell Doug to buy a copy of his book "Believe in America" to get his 59-point plan.
"The thing is," Obradovich writes, "the details in Romneys 59-point plan are the not the same details that media outlets keep talking about that are missing from Romneys plans."
She concludes, "Romney tonight passed up another chance to offer more specifics about his tax and Medicare plans. Maybe well have to wait and see who really comes down hard in the debates."

(24,411 posts)I love to hear this, because I am very worried about the debates. I know that Obama has the truth on his side. These Republicans live in a Fox News bubble, where their lies win every unaccountable, freak-show discussion they have.
Romney won't be able to repeat Fox News talking points--because he'll look like insane.
I think Romney is an ok debater. He did well during the Republican primary.
I'd love to hear more about your positive prognostications. I want to have more hope about this.
I do know that Obama is a skilled debater. He also has reason and the truth on this side. Also, I think Romney could be ready for a padded cell by the time the first debate hits--if his campaign keeps spiraling into the ditch.
Would love to hear more!

(2,391 posts)It wasn't difficult. It certainly wasn't factual. He even tried to bet Perry $10K over something - because that's 'normal' behavior.
All of the debates will be fun to watch. Not fun for Willard, though, especially if he loses his temper. He has had softball questions thrown at him for months. He's not ready for Obama to contradict him over and over again.

(24,411 posts)I live in Iowa, and I got the call tonight about the "town-hall meeting" via telephone. I put him on speaker phone and my 11 and 12 year old daughters kept saying, "Ask him why he put his dog on the roof of his car! Ask him, Mom!"
I thought that was funny (yet sad). Even tweens know that the man is insane.

Now Steve Benen has accumulated Volume XXXV of Mitt's LIES.. With this caveat..
Alas, Romney seems unfazed, both by the calendar and by life under a microscope -- he keeps repeating falsehoods without any real concern for consequences. In case there were any doubts about his worst habit, consider the 35th installment of my weekly series, chronicling Mitt's mendacity

(943 posts)Obama have a tape recording loaded with Romney saying the opposite. Remember the fox viewers
have only seen the lies. example: Romney: " he has taken a bad economy and made it worse". the next
he says " I never said he made it worse". The way I see it. it is going to be impossible to debate a moving lying target.
It would not be wise for the President to use the whole debate saying in response: " thats not true". in stead of "you are lying"
This has to be the first debate in history that uses technology, roll the tape moments in Romney's voice with time- lines and dates.

This is going to be an assbeating of monumental proportions. I don't take Republican candidates seriously. AT all. It's not even "Bewsh" levels anymore . . . we're an hour past that. The GOP is a clown car loaded to capacity with the most hyper-capitalist, racist, class-war-launching, illogical, non-trustworthy, absolutist, unempathetic bunch of shitsacks this side of Paul Weyrich.
Rather than go moderate, they'll never lose the Reagan/Bush-on-Steroids playbook because they'll never learn from their many, many mistakes. So this is who they're stuck with from now on.

(5,810 posts)I think Obama is up to the task and won't be afraid to respond just as firmly. I fully expect Mittens to give answers like he gave last night on his 60 Minutes interview where his response about his "big thing" was Freedom. Made me want to gag. He wants to restore our Freedoms? Why do these A$$holes think they have to run to the flag, mother and apple pie when they are asked questions like that? I suppose if you have NO GOOD answers, you just pull out the Flag, FREEDOM and Patriotism. And some people will fall for that and think he gave a GOOD answer, particularly since there are folks in this country who genuinely believe our FREEDOMS have been sacrificed by Obama. I wonder how many of them think about the freedoms we lost thanks to Bush and his gang? And they pulled the wool so far over our eyes that we shuffle through the line at the airport, removing our shoes, coats, belts, jewelry, cell phones, laptops and coins in our pockets all to keep us "safer". Many gladly consent to being treated like a criminal for no good reason other than some jackass in Washington says it's our best defense against the terrorists. The Romney supporters will like his simplistic answer if it fits into their world view and he makes them "feel good about America". Thank goodness President Obama has a just a tad bit more depth to his understanding of the world.
