Crewmember on Navy hospital ship Comfort tests positive for coronavirus

A crew member aboard the U.S. Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort has tested positive for novel coronavirus and is currently in isolation aboard the ship that is currently docked in New York City, according to a U.S. Navy statement.

The news comes on the same day that the hospital ship was designated to begin treating COVID-19 patients in New York City, a reversal from the earlier policy that it could only treat patients not infected with the coronavirus.

"There is no impact to Comfort’s mission, and this will not affect the ability for Comfort to receive patients," according to the Navy statement. "The ship is following protocols and taking every precaution to ensure the health and safety of all crewmembers and patients on board."

"The crew member had no contact with patients," the statement said.

3. The purpose of the one in L.A.'s port (Mercy), is not to treat the COVID-19 patients,

but to treat patients who need help with other emergencies: car accidents, etc—freeing up all other hospitals for COVID-19.
It may the be the same thing with Mercy. That's why it's scary: patients without the virus are being brought there.

Last I saw, Comfort had between 3 & 20. Differing reports. Dump made procedure so complex, that ship is useless, from what I saw online.

Strict rules were meant to keep coronavirus patients — or people with one of 49 other medical conditions — from being treated onboard, where an outbreak could spread quickly.

Carmen Yulín Cruz, the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, pointed out that a nearly identical situation played out after Hurricane Maria. The Comfort, sent to relieve the U.S. territory’s hospitals, only treated a few patients daily.

The USNS Comfort is now being used for COVID-19 patients.

President Donald Trump confirmed in his daily briefing that he’d called New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo earlier Monday to let him know that the USNS Comfort can now be used for COVID-19 patients.


“We’re going to let him do it,” said Trump, adding that the ship will will be used for patients from both New York and New Jersey.
