Trump convenes sports commissioners in hopes of filling stadiums

Source: The Hill

President Trump on Wednesday spoke with the heads of major sports leagues to solicit their thoughts on reopening parts of the economy during a pandemic that has cast doubt on whether sporting events will resume this year.

The president convened more than a dozen advisory groups covering different sectors of the economy. Other participants included New England Patriots Owner Robert Kraft and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones — both Trump donors — as well as Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Vince McMahon, CEO of WWE and husband of former Trump administration official Linda McMahon.

The president has been exceedingly optimistic about the chances of the NFL starting its season on time in September, even as public health experts and local officials cast doubt on the likelihood of holding large gatherings until a vaccine is ready. "We want to get our sports back, so importantly," Trump ... said Tuesday. "I'm tired of watching baseball games that are 14 years old," he said. "But I haven't actually had too much time to watch. I would say maybe I watch one batter and then I get back to work."

Bob Bowlsby, who runs the Big 12 Conference, told CBS Sports that the group's message was that college athletics would not resume until it was safe for students to return to campus. "Our players are students. If we're not in college, we're not having contests," Bowlsby said.

If they do and people get sick and possibly die... no one will go back and their businesses will never recover. Trump isn't helping anybody by forcing a reopen while the virus is still very active.

everything he does is towards that end. He doesn't want us to be able to early vote or vote by mail - oh no - he doesn't want us voting at all. Red states will shut down alla the precincts in blue areas and there will be people planted with guns to create riots. When that happens, he will declare martial law and cancel the election and deem himself winner. RW fascist Russian Repug SCOTUS will go along with this because they have the same goal in mind, destroying our liberal democracy in favor of a fascist oligarchy.

Dems are right to give repugs not one dime until the outright theft of 500 billion engineered by drumpf is stopped. Repugs smelling blood, want to go for the jugular and add another 250 billion slush fund for oligarchs with no oversight. That way they'd have sufficient $$ to destabilize elections everywhere in the country. They want the post office out of business so we can't do vote by mail, they want to kill us.

Most Democrats, liberals, aren't going to go to a stadium full of screaming people. The stadiums will be full of Trump true believers.

What pisses me off the most is how the right is still downplaying the severity of this virus. IMO, when all is said and done I believe that this virus is going to be much worse than anyone predicted.

for hours, I can't envision a more dangerous environment than huge stadiums and arenas packed with fans screaming their lungs out inches from one another. Let Trump and these greedy team owners sit in the cheap seats, literally rubbing shoulders and trading high fives with the great unwashed, not in their hermetically-sealed luxury skyboxes.

They can take temperatures, presumably ask questions about where people have been, maybe get them to produce proof they tested negative, etc. I'm assuming that will happen at some point (probably not a bad idea anyway - most of the illnesses I've had over the past ten or twenty years were probably contracted on a plane).

A football stadium with 110,000 people - not so much.

Funny how folks with full health insurance, mandated sick leave, death benefits and the ability to work remotely think nothing of using the government to force people who don’t have these backstops to go back to work and expose themselves to COVID-19.

I mean, what could be more important, filling stadiums to capacity with screaming, rabid (literally) fanatics, or canceling sports activities for one season per until a successful vaccination program is completed, thus assuring these screaming, rabid (literally) fanatics are not actually rabid, contagious, time bombs who would turn COVID-19 into a global death sentence for everyone?

Once again, Trump demonstrates his uncanny ability to make the exact wrong choice in any given situation, thus assuring his position as the absolute worst person in the world to be President of the United States of America.

With their multi-million dollar contracts.

The best he's going to get is televised games with no spectators. And that's still risky to players.

that a majority of major-league team owners are Republicans and closet or overt Trump humpers. They are seeing their billions go out the window for 2020. I'm sure the telephone lines are burning between this group and the White House.

Baseball, basketball and hockey are all toast and done for this year. NFL and NASCAR will put profit over people and push the limits. It's a given.

He's like an emperor holding coliseum fights. He's going to get major sports stars infected, all to entertain himself.

Look at what happened to the USS Mercy. They were all screened for the virus. Next thing you know, hundreds of them have it. You just can't say that the virus is controlled.

I hope that the various teams take a stand. They have a union; time to use it. And, colleges do not have to play, either. Let's sort this out.

I'm a sports person. I love to watch sports. I miss them. But, I'd rather wait a bit and see the players live to play another day.

IMO, the players in all the sports have a duty to stand up to Trump and be leaders to the younger kids. Show why they are so great.

We cancelled the Olympics because of this virus. THE OLYMPICS. We need to regroup, rethink, support our researchers, and not hurry back to crowds and infections just because Orange Doughboy is bored. We can do what we want, and we want to live.

Just because Asshole says it, doesn't mean we have to do it. Stay away from stadiums. They will not be safe.

The NBA shutdown over ONE positive test!
There's no reason why they wouldn't do it again over one positive.
NHL, XFL, Golf, Tennis, et all followed their lead & shut things down without anybody being infected.
So, one positive shut down everything.
It will just happen again.
