Organizers for RAGBRAI on Monday announced the ride for 2020 will be canceled due to COVID-19.
The 48th annual ride had been scheduled for July 19th through the 25th. According to the organization's website, the ride will be postponed until July 25 to July 31, 2021.
"RAGBRAI takes months of planning and preparation. Based on the extreme disruption COVID-19 has had and will have on the planning, we didnt feel it was responsible to move forward and put the safety of our riders, crew, communities, or residents of Iowa at risk," a statement said on the ride's website.
The RAGBRAI XLVIII route will remain the same for 2021 which includes Waterloo, Anamosa and Maquoketa, among others.

(1,606 posts)RAGBRAI is the oldest, longest, continuous bike ride in the world. This would have been 48. A week-long ride across Iowa in late July, it routinely draws about 15000 registered riders each year from all 50 states and throughout the world. Finally, someone had the good sense to realize that might not be such a good thing...

(33,982 posts)My first year trying it, and I've been training my ass off.
This is a huge event that is very well know to cyclists and non-cyclists alike. It brings huge amounts of revenue into Iowa. Just because you are non-plussed doesnt mean that others here do not believe it newsworthy and breaking news. There is always the option of just electing not to open the thread. You certainly didnt have to publicize your opinion that the thread isnt LBN. I thank the OP. I hadnt heard this news, and it is important to me.

(18,470 posts)Yeah we have a bunch of fucking idiots representing Iowa in the Governors mansion, in the state legislature, and Congress. So people look down on Iowans and act like we dont matter.

(11,396 posts)Yes it is breaking news (can't imagine why this so offends some)
Yes it is a fairly big deal (I'll refer to other descriptions in the string)
And, for an additional note .. it's happening in red state that has resisted much of the "shelter in place" recommendations. So .. private and civic organizations stepping up .. in the absence of political leadership.

The OP provided no background to clue ordinary people into his/her context.

(11,396 posts)the OP had a good deal of information AND a link to a story ...
The fact that the term RAGBRAI is not immediately identifiable to some is regrettable .. but that IS the name of the event .. kinda like Burning Man or Spring Break .. not everyone knows the when and where of all these things .. but the facts are easily uncovered! And discovering new things is part of life.
Sorry you were so hugely put upon, but .. click the damned link!

(101,400 posts)so, no, it did not have "a good deal of information".
The point about "breaking news of national importance" is that the nation should have some idea already why it a sudden development is "important" to the nation.
No, it is not remotely like Burning Man or Spring Break, which are not just nationally known, but internationally. RAGBRAI has only been talked about before on DU in the Iowa and Bicycling groups.

(22,881 posts)It is literally a city that rides between the Missouri River and the Mississippi ...its is a week long in hottest part of the summer.. 10,000 bikers a day from all around the world.. its approaching 50 years now that this particular ride has been going on..

(22,881 posts)and always beer... my GOD the beer.. and I have not ridden it.. but I have seen it off many times.. from that D I take it you have know the Ragbrai?? My brother has ridden it 7 times.. One of my favorite cities in the world is London, because you do not need to go anywhere else to see the world.. the world lives in London.. the English are out in the burbs, but the world and all its glory is right there in London and Dublin.. well for 7 days in July the world can be found in Iowa on a bike... lots of Heartlanders too..but there is the world on 2 wheels.. something to see as they head out that first morning wave after wave after wave..
JustABozoOnThisBus
(23,375 posts)It seems there are always points of constriction, such as a narrow covered bridge, where the cyclists try to remain in the saddle at less than one mile per hour, sort of leaning on each other, until the whole mess falls down, causing beer to spill.
I think the "D" you mention is the "Old English D" of the Detroit Tigers. It doesn't mean I know anything of Dublin, Des Moines, or Djabouti. I have visited London, an amazing place, but it was over fifty years ago. There may have been changes since then.
I hope we've gotten inoculated against CV19 by the time of next year's Ragbrai. I would not dream of riding all the way across Iowa, but we have some shorter rides in MI, punctuated by beer. Like Iowa, Michigan is deceptively not flat.
Peacetrain
(22,881 posts)Honestly jabotb I think maybe 2000 are registered and the other 8000 or so ride a part of the trip.. and you are probably best to start at the western end by the Missouri... that is what you do.. you dip your tire in the Missouri.. and ride the to the Mississippi and dip your tire in the Mississippi.. the land between two rivers.. but that first part is much flatter, I used to live in Western Iowa and always got up at 4 am or so to to where ever they were going to start and set up my chair and coffee and watch the riders go by..
That D the calligraphy D used to be the one they used with the Register.. I thought maybe you were one of the Register reporters..
Oh London has changed.. It really is very International.. Love the city..

My brother has ridden it 7 times now..

(49,060 posts)It might be easy to assume everyone knows about big Iowan events and perhaps we should. But it is not a good assumption. It is certainly simpler to provide some context on the assumption that there might be some who don't. Neither the article nor the summary provided context. The article was from a local news outlet and was speaking to Iowans.
Nobody dissed Iowa or Iowans in this thread. So I don't know where you are digging up that grievance. Past slights made you sensitive? It happens, but hasn't happened in this thread.
Aren't we all here to help inform each of us? I thought so but perhaps I am mistaken.
