The White House Gift Shop is selling coronavirus commemorative coins now

For only $125, you can remember the deaths of friends and family forever.

The White House Gift Shop is allowing online pre-orders for a coronavirus commemorative coin that costs $125. The website claims that 20 percent of proceeds will be donated each day to U.S. hospitals including Johns Hopkins for its COVID-19 Coordination and Trackins [sic].
The coin features the names of President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin, Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams, Coronavirus Response Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx, and Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci. It has a graphic of the COVID-19 virus on one side and the presidential podium on the other.
................
The coronavirus coin is the 11th in their Historic Moments collection. Other coins in the collection include one bearing Trumps face and deemed a symbol of the genius level thinking & proven successes of President Donald J. Trump...................
............................
The White House Gift Shop is a controversial business that is only tangentially related to the actual White House. At one point it was affiliated with the Secret Service, but the trademark is held by a private individual, Anthony Giannini.
Giannini describes himself as non-partisan, but admits he is a Trump supporter..............................

I am fine with selling a commemorative coin for charity IF no WH names are on it. This is just Trump selling his brand again. damn

There is also a lovely collection of past White House Christmas ornaments, some of which are quite arty. We have two: one was a gift from a friend who worked in the EPA legal dept during Bush 41 years and I bought the other one at a Texas Democratic Women State Convention. One of them is a 3D gold White House and the other features a painting of Grover Cleveland's wedding. They are both in the catalog but I could only get one of them to copy

They appear to be issued by the White House Historical Association.
It is nice to know that the inventory is not just related to the current administration. What is the most revolting is the #45 collection of coins.

(13,776 posts)This is gross and inappropriate, but it's probably important to note (which is why I'm posting this up high... sorry to hijack your comment, so we don't look foolish by assuming this is Trump's doing, plausible though that may be) that this is not any kind of official White House-sanctioned gift shop or GOP fundraising site or anything like that. Just a turd trying to make a buck.

I am thoroughly convinced that the TRUE death toll of Covid is being hidden in so many different ways. And despite the RepubliCONS efforts we have still been able to achieve yet another #1 for Lardass..........
I fully expect that the ignoring of the stay at home being ignored that we will see a real explosion of the Virus here in the U.S.
One wave after another, and especially in the fall.
The world doesn't know shit about this Virus yet, and we are playing Russian Roulette with our population with one half assed solution after another.........The Coup de Gras will be when we find out that this Virus is one of the ones that we cannot develop an immunity to and no vaccine can be developed that truly gives any protection......
Mother Nature has finally put her foot down at how we humans have been treating her planet that she has reached her boiling point and said: Here, try this one.................
This is just one "last hurrah" for the RepubliCON party. I cannot tell you how many times over the last decade in particular that I have heard old white men saying: "That's ok, I won't be around, what do I care"......

From the [not] official site of the White House gift shop:
{snip}
IMPORTANT UPDATE:
After my post went up and we noticed more misspellings in the offerings, I became suspicious and it turns out that in 2018 Talking Points Memo went to through great lengths to find out the truth about the White House Gift Shop.
The history of the Gift Shop goes back to a service organization affiliated with the US Secret Service. As recently as a decade ago it was run by the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division Benefit Fund. But on December 27th, 2011 the UDBF signed a contract with Giannini Strategic Enterprises to take over the Gift Shop business and run it on the UDBFs behalf. In essence, the UDBF licensed GSE to run their store on its behalf.
Oncce Giannini was gifted the Gift Shop he went to the US Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the name White House Gift Shop. From what I can tell his initial application was rejected on the pretty straightforward argument that it gave the false impression that it was part of the White House.
Giannini made a counter argument that there were other trademark holders with the phrase white house in their title (though those dont suggest any connection to the Executive Office of the President) and that, contrary to the Trademark offices claim, the actual White House (the governmental institution) was in fact connected to the company. The Trademark office bought this argument and issued the trademark. It seems to be the only trademark in existence specifically referencing a relationship to the White House.
Bottom line: The White House Gift Shop owns the federally sanctioned trademark on its name but is NOT actually connected to the White House any longer.
