As debate looms, Romney looks to Pennsylvania

Source: AP-Excite

By STEVE PEOPLES

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - His path to victory narrowing, Mitt Romney is looking to Pennsylvania to help slow President Barack Obama's momentum ahead of a high-stakes meeting on the debate stage next week.

The Republican presidential nominee was to campaign Friday in the Philadelphia area, first courting donors at a high-dollar fundraiser and then meeting voters at a midday rally.

Fresh off a promise to spend more time in the swing states that matter most, Romney will pass much of the day in a state that has not supported a Republican presidential candidate in nearly a quarter-century. His campaign is not running any television ads in Pennsylvania, and aides privately concede that Obama has a significant advantage just 40 days before Election Day.

They suggest that Romney's visit - his first to the state in more than two months - is largely designed to raise the money needed to narrow Obama's edge in more competitive states. After raising $5 million at a Washington event Thursday, Romney is expected to generate more than $1 million in Philadelphia and an additional $7 million at a Boston fundraiser later Friday.

5. This is why some of us kept wondering why the media kept calling PA a "swing state"

but then making NJ deep blue. NJ went for Poppy in 1992 when PA went for Clinton and every Dem nominee since 1988. And NJ rotates parties for governor just like PA. For every Corbett, Ridge, and Thornburg that PA had had, NJ has had a Christie, Whitman, and Kean.

They are disenfranchising 1,000,000 Democrats in Pennsylvania this year, and all of our efforts to stop them have failed.
That makes it a swing state.

downticket so in some sense Romney is helping the Dems. I don't think R is going to do anything so loyal as to divert any of those funds to help the party of greed.

Also, he is going to likely waste more money on ads than ground game which is the real crippling effect downticket.

like that the judges are going to enforce that new Voter ID law that could disenfranchise a shitload of people.

Obama has been consistently in the deep rich dark blue on Electoral Vote.com (strong dem) now for WEEKS and likely blue for the entire year.

The only way Mitt can win in PA is if it's stolen.

6. I still don't fully get it. Why is he aways fund raising?

All year we were told he had significant money advantages. I know the gap has narrowed. But his campaign can't be this hard up for cash. He is in Philly campaigning just to have something on the calendar. Maybe he can hold a rally in Boston next?

His campaign schedule is being determined by fund raising events. Not the electoral college map.

They pooled his money with general GOP money to try to demoralize Dems. It failed, and then the truth came out.

Plus they are wasting what they have on ads. The more people see him, the more they dislike him.

In my neck of the woods, they moved from cheap real estate in my very red village to expensive real estate in a 1% village to even more expensive real estate in that village. I pass their county hq every time I go to work -- never more than 2 cars there, usually just one. None on the weekend. The "island" between their parking lot and the road is filled with signs -- Blue signs, Green signs, even an Orange sign. But no RR signs, which are limited to their window!!!

Obama, on the other hand, moved his hq from the more expensive ones that the GOP had in '10 to less expensive on the edge of a higher population, working class village to my north. I don't get up that way too often, so don't know what the activity level is, but cars in the parking lot won't tell the story there since it's within walking distance of the village center.

It'll be interesting if Smith shows up for either one of these. I seriously doubt that Corbett will.

Romney's people have decided the only way to victory is to take the last two weeks of the campaign and run saturation negative ad barrages in the states that are close. This will take hundreds of millions, much of which will come from the candidate's personal accounts.

Given the state of the Romney campaign - bad advisors and a worse candidate - it probably.won't work. But it's all they have. Go for broke, and we can only hope it leaves him that.
