Trump 'will not even consider' renaming Army bases named for Confederate leaders

Source: The Hill

President Trump said Wednesday he will "not even consider" renaming Army bases that were named for Confederate leaders after top military officials indicated recently they are open to the idea. In a series of tweets, Trump argued the bases have become part of U.S. history that should not be “tampered with.”

“These Monumental and very Powerful Bases have become part of a Great American Heritage, and a history of Winning, Victory, and Freedom,” he tweeted, adding that “HEROES” who won two world wars were trained on the “Hallowed Grounds” of the bases. “Therefore, my Administration will not even consider the renaming of these Magnificent and Fabled Military Installations,” Trump continued.

Minutes after Trump posted his comments, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany began Wednesday’s briefing by distributing Trump’s tweet to reporters and reading it in its entirety from the podium. "That was directly from the president. We spent some time working on that, and I wanted to deliver that to you," she said.

McEnany said Trump would veto the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) if the massive spending bill mandated changing the names of the bases.

Last October I went to the Submarine museum in Groton. Walked in the door and there was his portrait. I almost turned around and walked out.

The Joint Base thing came about during the BRAC thing, when they were closing a lot of bases. There were places like Western Washington, where Fort Lewis was built next door to McChord AFB. Both get a lot of use, so they merged them into Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

“Today, Donald Trump made it official. Rather than move this nation further away from institutionalized racism, he believes we should cling to it and its heritage, by keeping the names of racist traitors on the gates of our military bases. These bases were named long after the Civil War was over, by whites who wanted to fight back against progress towards racial equality. Donald Trump stands shoulder-to-shoulder with them, and against the ideals that the United States Army stands for.”

It's the Army's primary aviation training instillation. Rename it Fort Davis.

General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr who commanded the Tuskegee Airmen. When he graduated from the Point in 1936, he and his father were the only two black officers in the Army.

Since Donald Trump wants to keep the names of losers on Army bases... Might as well rename Greensboro since General Cornwallis of the British Army defeated Nathaniel Green of the US forces - but it was a phyrric victory and the British lost the Revolutionary War.

To me, renaming the army bases makes sense. What I suggested is nonsense. Just like Trump's stance and intransigence.
