Ousted U.S. prosecutor refused to sign letter blasting coronavirus limits on religious gatherings

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Shortly before Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor Geoffrey Berman was forced out of his post on Friday, he refused to sign off on a letter from the U.S. Department of Justice blasting New York City’s mayor for imposing social-distancing rules on religious gatherings, a department official confirmed on Monday.

The letter, which was signed by the department's top civil rights attorney, criticized Mayor Bill de Blasio for limiting the number of people who could attend religious gatherings to prevent coronavirus spread, but failing to impose similar restrictions on individuals protesting the death of George Floyd.

The Wall Street Journal first reported Berman's refusal to sign the letter, citing his concern the letter was a political stunt.

"The message to the public from New York City’s government appears to favor certain secular gatherings and disfavor religious gatherings," the June 19 letter said.

That any DOJ attorney would sign that letter is sickening. Nevilledog Jun 2020 #6

without regular contact with their local phony liar and sociopath pretending to "lead" them in "worship" every week.

Undoubtedly they WANT to maintain emotional power over the unbalanced, disturbed, ignorant, immature followers who crave the security they believe they find in church among their fellow fundies.

We had 6 cases of coronavirus. Overnight, we went to 240. Now we have 258. A local church did not follow the social distancing guidelines. It's spreading like wildfire now. Eastern Oregon. Light House church.

many stories here on DU have chronicled pastors that were virus deniers, and who've died as a result. Hey, I've always said that life is full of choices and sometimes it's critical to make the right one. In this case...life altering for sure. This is just more hubris and utter BULLSHIT from this administration and uber right wing Dominionist Bill Barr at the DOJ. It's one more false narrative they try to prop themselves up with constantly. They can lock kids up in cages, bungle Covid 19 all to hell and watch over 100K die, appoint unqualified dipshits from hell to critical judge jobs and completely ruin the environment BUT BY GOD NO ONE WILL TELL THEM THEY CAN'T GO TO CHURCH!!!!!!!!!

So loathsome and beneath contempt...every single one of them. I just saw actual footage of his 'rally' the other night and it was like a mix of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Rocky Horror Picture Show and a bad Halloween party. I mean, I'd LIKE to think this country has hit rock bottom, but I fear it hasn't.
