New coronavirus cases in the U.S. soar to highest single-day total
Source: Washington Post
Across the United States, more than 36,000 new infections were reported by state health departments on Wednesday surpassing the previous single-day record of 34,203 set on April 25. Texas, Florida and California led the way, with all three states reporting more than 5,000 new cases apiece.
Even as case numbers climb, reports circulated that the federal government is poised to stop providing federal aid to testing sites in some hard-hit states, including Texas, prompting a top federal official to respond that testing was on the rise.
Since the start of the pandemic, the United States has recorded more than 2.3 million coronavirus cases and at least 119,000 deaths, while the global number of cases has soared past 9 million.

(2,809 posts)While that may be possible, I've got sobering not-news about that.
If Trump and co. release a "vaccine" before the elections I'd be highly dubious about that.
I also have to be a bit careful saying what I'll say but I'll say it anyway here, slipped in this thread.
This is the same class as nearly 27,000 other coronaviruses, yet it's one bugger of one that mutates in each host.
We'll be very lucky to develop a vaccine effective against one or two strains.
Only a very few "flu" causing coronas of them have effective vaccines. They tend, largely to lack that mutative trait.
And the ones that cause viral "common cold" have none, despite dedicated research ongoing for many, many decades now.
We have made some genetic-code strides that could, just might.... very slim chance... that we get lucky.
This is a novel coronavirus, never before encountered before 2019.
There is far more chance of developing some virus-replication slowing anti-virals effective, not sure-fire cures, but agents against this.
In the same way a stopped clock, DT was (ahem) "right" about hydroxy. And very, very wrong that any effective dose would be
immediately lethal.
The most, possibly promising trials await results:
I have some more links at work, however many of them are highly technical

(26,045 posts)...because I've been tracking cases since the pandemic first started and, according to my spreadsheet, there were 43,438 new cases (330,891 from the previous day's 304,826) on April 6th. I can only assume the CDC went back and post-corrected several days worth of figures, to spread out that day's total over the lower totals the two days before.

I'm slipping this in this thread because I'm taking radical action.
Oddly enough, I'll be moving to an area with more "known" cases, but I'm far more afraid of what I've seen where I'm at.
I got situated here as a travel job turned permanent position 5 years ago. Had it not been for Trump and COVID, this would still be an amicable place to live...
That has quickly turned really, really ugly scene with the local "redneck" big pickem'up drivers with TRUMP stickers. I'm in a relatively rural area of California.
It's like they've gone full-on (beware Star Trek TOS reference here)... "FESTIVAL... FESTIVAL!!!! yAHHH!! NO BUDDY GONNA TELL ME TO WEAR A MASK.. WHOO-HOO, COUGH, WHOO-HOO.
I see it on my way to work. I see it going home. I've seen it in the grocery stores I refuse to even enter.
Something about this damn Tulsa rally debacle has stirred them up, made them wild animals determined to spread disease and general mayhem.
One of them drove down our street with a huge TRUMP flag waving from the pickup bed, full of beer swilling dipshits.
And I'm scared stiff to even stay here.
I'm turning in one month's notice tomorrow and my rental evacuation notice with my rent . Part of that is because changing jobs during Mercury retrograde is highly inadvisable.
However, more "metropolitan" areas near the bay area are far stricter at following social-distancing, requiring masks, they've seen more of the troubles, their cases are, on the average, flattening, dropping down, or only slightly spiking with far more "reserved" re-opening, despite having far more "reported" cases... than the "official number here.. and about that... um hum, right. I work at the local hospital. I've seen so-called "caregivers", one young one I spied was on fucking BREITBART just two days ago right there at work. Major red flag. The precautions are slipshod. I'm keeping my distance and wearing major protection for the rest of my time here. I've already made my trips there the last two weekends, felt far safer picking up my groceries from well mask adorned staff wearing gloves, kept distance, placed my order in the truck where I could disinfect all packages on arrival home.
I don't dare say much more on any public forum till I'm gone.
But the BS about this pandemic and how this place is protecting it's "tourism" status....
I miss ice cream.
But the last local delivery I took where I had to ask the delivery person to put on a mask... nearly did it.
What I've witnessed since....
I'm done here.
And it's going to hurt me, badly financially. I'll have to cash out my retirement fund which is losing money right now anyway, best to cut my losses.
And hope my good reputation at my profession can land new work in by end of September.
