Trump decries Russian bounty reports as 'fake news' as his national security adviser says response o
Source: Washington Post
President Trump continued to insist Wednesday that reports that Russia was offering bounties to Taliban-linked militants to kill U.S. military personnel in Afghanistan were fake news as his national security adviser disclosed that options had been drawn up to present to Trump on how to respond if the allegations were corroborated.
National security adviser Robert C. OBrien reiterated during a television interview on Thursday that national security officials decided not to present Trump with unverified intelligence regarding Russias purported plans but indicated that they took the situation seriously enough to prepare options for the president.
If this eventually becomes something thats proven, or something that we believe, we need to have options for the president to deal with the Russians, OBrien said during an appearance on Fox News Fox & Friends. I can tell you this, if this information turned out to be true, and now we may never know, but if it turned out to be true, we had options ready to go, and the president was ready to take strong action, as he always is.
The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that White House officials were first informed in early 2019 of intelligence reports that Russia was offering the bounties to kill U.S. and coalition military personnel, but the information was deemed sketchy and in need of additional confirmation, according to people familiar with the matter.

(70,582 posts)American officials intercepted electronic data showing large financial transfers from a bank account controlled by Russias military intelligence agency to a Taliban-linked account, evidence that supported their conclusion that Russia covertly offered bounties for killing U.S. and coalition troops in Afghanistan, according to three officials familiar with the intelligence.
Though the United States has accused Russia of providing general support to the Taliban before, analysts concluded from other intelligence that the transfers were most likely part of a bounty program that detainees described during interrogations.
Investigators also identified by name numerous Afghans in a network linked to the suspected Russian operation, the officials said including, two of them added, a man believed to have served as an intermediary for distributing some of the funds and who is now thought to be in Russia.
The intercepts bolstered the findings gleaned from the interrogations, helping reduce an earlier disagreement among intelligence analysts and agencies over the reliability of the detainees. The disclosures further undercut White House officials claim that the intelligence was too uncertain to brief President Trump. In fact, the information was provided to him in his daily written brief in late February, two officials have said.

(11,885 posts)And white nationalists , and KKK are good people. Again its deny, deny ,deny until its proven then he changes his story. Typical mob tactic. Once a con man and serial liar fascist , always a con man and serial lying fascist. trump will never change , or be truthful on anything. trump is owned by putin and why he won't say anything bad towards him , even killing American service members , and Senate Republican's are lockstep with trump and putin , which will enrage even more to run from their party to never return. trump and republicans are going to be punished badly this upcoming election as more gets exposed on them too. Maybe trumps taxes will expose his corruption with putin and many others very soon.

(22,913 posts)The ONLY thing he has going for him in all this is to embrace the line that there is not yet consensus inside the intelligence community as to whether the Russian bounty reports have sufficiently been proven true. That is the only thin reed he can grasp onto to explain why he supposedly wasn't briefed, and why his administration has taken no action against Russia even while Trump tries to bring Putin back into the G7.
But lack of consensus cuts both ways. It means some are convinced Russia offered a bounty while others are not. Best case for Trump was to claim that more analysis is needed, but no, even though experts are still working to get to the bottom of all this, Trump allegedly already knows enough to call these reports "Fake News". That proves he has absolutely no interest in finding out what actually happened, for Trump it is already "Case Closed". Trump offers further proof that he has no interest in protecting our troops when Putin is involved. Idiot.

(1,789 posts)propped up by a board in the back? That is how thin any defense he has ever had for anything is. He doesn't realize that we can just walk around to the side and see it's not a building. Reporters ask him fact based questions and he goes "fake news" and we just sit there at an impasse over and over again.
Somebody please give Wanda Sykes White House press credentials up in this mutherfucker. After getting him on his heels about his appearance, she could batter him with the facts and see what he says then. We might not get answers but it would break up the monotony.
