Republican senators shoot down Trump suggestion to 'delay the election'

Source: NBC News

Those who weighed in offered reactions ranging from "I don’t think that’s a particularly good idea" to "the election is not going to be delayed."

WASHINGTON — Some Republican senators politely rejected President Donald Trump's suggestion Thursday to "Delay the Election" beyond Nov. 3, indicating that the long-shot idea is dead on arrival in Congress.

"No, we are not going to delay the election," No. 3 Republican Sen. John Barrasso, Wyo., said on Fox Business Network. "We're going to have the election completed and voting completed by Election Day."

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the chairman of the Judiciary Committee and a frequent Trump golfing partner, also gave the suggestion a thumbs-down. "I don’t think that’s a particularly good idea," he said.

Graham added that he believed Trump's "concerns about mail-in voting are valid, but delaying the election is not the right answer."

Wisconsin GOP Slams Donald Trump Over Election Delay Comments

When Donald Trump proposed moving the November election, Wisconsin GOP leaders fired back.

MILWAUKEE, WI — Two top Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin are rejecting President Donald Trump's call to delay the November general election on suspicion of voter fraud related to mail-in voting procedures due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Trump tweeted Thursday: "With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???"

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) and Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) authored posts on Twitter Thursday, saying they opposed delaying the November election.

In a tweet, Vos said Republican leaders were right to oppose a delay in the April election in Wisconsin, and likewise, should resist all efforts to delay the one in November.

They know that to push this idiotic plan to delay the elections just might be bridge too far that could result in open rebellion. Yet they -still continue to spread the outright lie that mail-in voting will be subject to election fraud. The only fraud that we have in our nation is the damn damn Republican Party that defiles every word of the Constitution. They are conspiring with a man who is determined to overthrow the results of the election to stay in power. That is treason: plain and simple.

If they really had a good plan to nix the election, they wouldn't have to do this. They would just keep it silent and do it. So unless there's an airtight backup plan, we can expect this type of sparring all the way to election day and we have to parry every volley.

7. You should not need a reason to request an "Absentee" Ballot

or call it Mail In if you wish. After the first time voting in Florida and was greeted with "Lookie Here, We got ourselves a Democratic", I did not want to vote in person. Granted I liked going back up North in Fall. Sometimes I was back on Election Day, sometimes I wasn't.

Florida never asked why I wanted that Absentee Ballot. After a couple of years requesting, I was sent it automatically.

We now live in PA. I was stunned to hear that until very recently you needed a valid reason to request an Absentee Ballot. WRONG. No reason should be needed.

Florida never asked me to give a reason. I voted in the PA Primary by Mail In this year and they did not ask why either. Both States sent me a email stating my ballot had been received.

8. Back in March, I wrote the following post here on DU:

In that post, I wrote the following:

Scenario C: Here's something else to think about. What if one of the reasons that Trump is sitting on his ass so much and not doing much to help get out massive amounts of COVID-19 tests, and not forcing factories to make ventilators and masks, is that he hopes that a massive COVID-19 pandemic situation, still raging by November 2020, is his ticket to avoid getting defeated at the ballot box in November, and to stay in office past January? What if Trump actually has a huge motivation to *NOT* to fix the coronavirus pandemic because he thinks to let the pandemic rage will let him stay in office? What if the thing that most proves that Trump should be booted out of office, his nonaction on the pandemic, turns out to be the very thing that allows him to stay in office? Wouldn't that be ironic, don't ya think? Wouldn't that be horrific?

Back in March, I could totally see Donald Trump letting the COVID-19 pandemic rage so that he could use it as an excuse to push back the election. If I could see it back then, someone in the Trump administration could have seen it back then too. Did Trump sit on his ass regarding COVID, or even deliberately make the pandemic worse by pushing states to reopen early just so that he could try to use the pandemic to delay the election?
