Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best says she will retire amid protests, City Council cuts
Source: Seattle Times
Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best will step down, she has announced, in the wake of protests against police brutality, criticism over the Police Departments response and votes by the City Council to shrink the police force and cut her wages.
This was a difficult decision for me, but when its time, its time, Best wrote in a Monday night message to Police Department employees.
Best and Mayor Jenny Durkan have scheduled a news conference for Tuesday, the mayors office said.
The news about the chief was first reported Monday night on air by KIRO radios Dori Monson and on Twitter by Q13 reporter Brandi Kruse, citing anonymous sources.

Aren't you struck by the irony that a city that's 70% white drives a black female police chief from office for the cause of Black Lives Matter?

(69 posts)My head is spinning these days trying to figure out what is going on.
I would think Chief Best would be a role model for both women and people of color.
I do think we (Democrats) are tying ourselves up in knots with all the Social Justice "rules". Should I be happy that Seattle (I am not) is doing this or should I be upset (I am) about the loss of a black woman in a leadership position? It is all very confusing anymore.

(2,022 posts)I expect we will see a further decline in the quality of cops, not unlike what has happened with politicians over the last few decades. They are jobs that fewer and fewer people want.
