House Oversight chair introduces bill to preserve USPS services.

House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn B. Maloney (D-N.Y.) introduced a bill to restrict changes to the U.S. Postal Service's level of operation, the representative's office announced on Wednesday.
Why it matters: The bill comes amid increased scrutiny from Democratic lawmakers, who say recent efforts to restructure USPS threaten the use of mail-in ballots for the November election. Maloney further notes that individuals depend on USPS for critical deliveries, including medications.
How it works: Maloney's bill would require the USPS to maintain the same "operations or level of service" it had on Jan. 1, 2020, until either next year or the end of the coronavirus pandemic.
What she's saying: Our Postal Service should not become an instrument of partisan politics, but instead must be protected as a neutral, independent entity that focuses on one thing and one thing onlydelivering the mail," Maloney said in a statement.

(18,632 posts)Trump wants to eliminate the Post Office before the election so that's exactly what they all want too.
There's really nothing Democrats can do about it.
They will have to just try to work around a mail in election without the Post Office functioning.

(3,495 posts)Seniors depend on U.S. Mail more than any other group. Many are home-bound, many are not comfortable converting all of their bills, notifications, etc. to electronic correspondence.
I've just notified AARP of my concerns. May as well put THEIR lobbyists to work.

(6,445 posts)Directing the Postal Service to restore operational levels they already funded and injunctive relief to stop further interference with the delivery of the mail given the gravity of the enormous harm to people whos lives literally depend on having their medicine delivered on time and businesses who rely on shipping their goods as a matter of their survival. Also they should explore all available options to remove DeJoy from that position post haste.

(36,053 posts)can be brought up on charges of harm to Americans' right to vote. And everyone he brought in to do the machinery slow down. One doesn't eliminate machinery that helps postal workers allegedly "on quarantine."
It amounts to mail tampering, which is a federal crime. Mail "delayed" is mail denied.
Getting that guy, DeJoy, is going to be tricky, but the public should actively monitor their post offices and its shippers like FedEx which delivers overnight an air mail, and also has contributed 63% of its money to Republicans, which gave them a big fat tax break.
I'm in Florida and do not for one minute trust that my mail in ballot will reach Illinois, my state of residence. I'll probably put it in a larger envelope and send it to a friend up there to put in a dropbox for me. I shouldn't have to.
