The UAE's peace deal with Israel is a 'win-win solution,' says UAE minister

The United Arab Emirates' peace deal with Israel is a "win-win solution" that takes away the "looming threat" of annexation in the West Bank, according to the Gulf country's minister of state for foreign affairs. "We were in Arab League meetings ... and the whole idea was, what do we do to stop this annexation? Somehow, annexation seemed as a looming threat that will undermine any prospects of a two-state solution," Anwar Gargash told CNBC's Dan Murphy on Thursday. His comments were made shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced yesterday that both countries agreed to normalize relations, making the UAE the first Persian Gulf state and the third Arab nation to have open diplomatic ties with Israel.

"The UAE was quite active diplomatically and we took an unprecedented step of our ambassador ... saying basically that annexation will just wreck the whole prospect of negotiations and peace, and will affect Israel's prospects of establishing relations with the Arab world," Gargash said. "I can't really pinpoint a certain moment, but the idea developed that why don't we actually create a win-win solution," he added.

Thomas Warrick, non-resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, agreed with the sentiment. "It's a good day for Israel and for the UAE, they both get something out of this that they very much want," he said. "The UAE shows its value as a strategic partner to both U.S. political parties. Israel gets out of their being stuck over the settlements issue ... This gives them a valuable prize, normalization of relations with the UAE."

Gargash described the deal as a way of "defusing a real threat" to a two-state solution and "hopefully" allowing negotiations to restart, but not a "roadmap for peace" between Israel and Palestine. "This is really up to the Palestinians, up to the Israelis, up to other traditional brokers such as the Americans," he said.

Probably the most important news of 2020, outside of Covid. It's a remarkable achievement, and a clear signal to Iran and Turkey, neither of which has the best interest of the region in mind.

I’m no expert and would not be able to parse and interpret the fine details.

Is this possibly the only good thing Covid-45 has achieved? Or is there some ulterior self-aggrandizing motivation as is usually the case.

But sometimes flawed people can be very useful. Trump is very good at making people with common interests do things together, even if they dislike each other. It's how he cobbled together real estate deals in NYC for decades.

Iran and, to a lesser extent, Turkey is the common enemy of the Sunni states and Israel.

And, candidly, the other Arab states have lost patience with the Arabs in Judea/Samaria -- they've been offered several acceptable deals, and just continued to be suicidal -- mainly at the behest of Iran.

I expect several other states to join shortly.

Uh, the BLM protests? And the framing on this Israel-UAE "Peace Deal", is ridiculous. They were not at war and not about to go to war. This is a positive step, but does little to solve the real peace issues the region faces.

But take that stuff to a Neo-Nazi website where it belongs!

For those who don't know, Rashid Khalidi is a former spokesman for the PLO terrorist organization.

He refers to the Mizrachi Jewish people who were racially-cleansed from the surrounding Arab and Muslim nations in an attempt to conveniently murder them in Israel as "European colonizers", apparently because the efforts to kill them failed, repeatedly, most notably in 1967 and again a few years later on Yom Kippur.

He completely muddles the Balfour Declaration and misrepresents history of the area to the point of non-recognition.

And locally in the USA, Rashid is also concerned that Jewish people "infest" American politics (you know, quoting Hitler in Mien Kampf). We're vermin, to him.

No thanks.

with your characterization. Rashid Khalidi is the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University and the Director of the Middle East Institute of Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs in New York City.
Palestinians and Zionists have differing views, and we should understand and respect both. Remember that one person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter, and it's best to avoid name calling.

I stated that was untrue.

And sorry, intentionally targeting schools, buses, and the like is terrorism.

But, hey, Jewish Lives Don’t Matter. We’re just vermin. Not even human, according to Rashid.
