Judge tosses another Carter Page suit against DNC over dossier

Source: Politico

A federal judge in Chicago has tossed out a lawsuit former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page filed against the Democratic National Committee over the so-called dossier it commissioned in 2016 that alleged Page and other Trump allies colluded with Russia.

U.S. District Court Judge Harry Leinenweber dismissed the suit Monday on technical grounds, ruling that the Chicago-based court lacked jurisdiction over the DNC and other defendants in the case, including law firm Perkins Coie and partners Marc Elias and Michael Sussman.

Leinenweber said the DNC and the firm lacked sufficient ties to Northern Illinois to be sued there and the events related to the suit had virtually no connection to the region.

“On its face, the Complaint fails to establish an Illinois connection,” wrote Leinenweber, an appointee of President Ronald Reagan. “Plaintiffs’ claims consist entirely of out-of-state activity by out-of-state actors.”

International Shoe v. Washington. The defendant must have a sufficient nexus of contact to anticipate being haled into court in the jurisdiction. Perkins Coie is based in SF and the DNC I would assume is DC.

What the hell they thought they were doing filing in Chicago is beyond me.

But why? What am I missing?

Or is this just gross incompetence?

Ty for validating my thoughts. Seems stupid to file in wrong jurisdiction.

A sense of humor about having their time wasted. They must have had an argument, but I’m damned if I know what it is.

I cannot imagine why anyone would knowingly do something so stupid.

I would think this just trashes an attorney's reputation.

So, I guess they are just brainless.

So he was looking for somewhere else to file.

The gist of it:

The law firm Perkins Cole - that worked on the dossier case for the DNC, and which Page sued as well - has one of their ~20 offices in Chicago. Despite the fact that the Perkins partner who represented them, Marc Elias, does not actually work in that office, he argued that the existence of that branch was sufficient cause to for the case to be heard there. Oh, and that candidate Obama's campaign was run out of Chicago, and Chicago is in Illinois. And that Mr Page is a desperate but sort-of-functioning nut-job.

Wasn't this investigation started by Trump's fellow competitors during the republican primary?

And then continued by the democrats?

Trying to ultimately exonerate Flynn?

Or, maybe to ensure tRump's election is not deemed invalid and all those judgeships overturned?
