Trump seeks to pin California blackouts on Democrats
Source: Politico
President Donald Trump on Tuesday blamed Democratic officials in California for triggering a spate of blackouts that plunged parts of the state into darkness, a move solely in the hands of apolitical operators of the electric grid.
In California, Democrats have intentionally implemented rolling blackouts forcing Americans in the dark. Democrats are unable to keep up with energy demand, Trump wrote on Twitter.
Meanwhile, I gave America energy independence in fact, so much energy we could never use it all, he added without evidence. The Bernie/Biden/AOC Green New Deal plan would take Californias failed policies to every American!
Hundreds of thousands of California residents were affected over the weekend by a series of rolling blackouts, and Pacific Gas and Electric, the utility for most of Northern California, said to expect more on Tuesday evening. The region has suffered a heat wave in recent days, creating a spike in power needs as residents crank up their air-conditioning and tax the system. Californias grid operator said the malfunction of two natural gas plants and dipping electricity from solar and wind power contributed to a supply shortfall.

(35,320 posts)More likely he's pointing to the California PUC's role in regulating prices, permits, and other aspects of the electrical generation industry. The PUC's commissioners are appointed by the governor. The longest serving current commissioner was appointed by Governor Brown; more recent ones were appointed by Governor Newsom.
Commissionerships are officially non-partisan positions, but that says little about the people occupying the posts. It's not like the USPS board of governors which when fully appointed can't have a party imbalance greater than 1. If 9 members appointed, a 5/4 split is the biggest majority possible. (Don't know if ex officio members of the USPS board can vote.)

(12,047 posts)Steve Berberich, chief executive of the California Independent System Operator, which runs the grid, said the system was expected to fall short by about 2,700 megawatts Tuesday evening. Thats the equivalent of nearly three nuclear plants and enough electricity to power about 2 million customers.
California officials have acknowledged that a heavy reliance on solar power which was responsible for nearly 20% of the states electricity supply Tuesday afternoon has complicated grid reliability. Solar energy fades as the sun goes down, depriving the state of crucial supplies.
But Berberich has pointed to other problems, such as California utilities failure to line up more power through contracts well ahead of time, leaving them at the mercy of possible 11th-hour shortages.
Renewables have not caused this issue, Berberich told reporters.
On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state wont retreat from its green-energy goals, which include a law that requires the grid to be carbon free by 2045. However, he said we cannot sacrifice reliability as we move forward in this transition.
Berberich said heroic conservation efforts led by refineries, ports and other industrial users responding to pleas from Newsoms top aides prevented major blackouts Monday night.
