Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk on Friday showcased pigs with computer brain chips during his unveiling of Neuralink, an upcoming technology aiming to bring symbiosis between artificial intelligence and the human brain.
The live showcase involved displaying real-time neural signals from one of the pigs, which Musk named Gertrude, CNBC reported.
Musk said the process for installing a Neuralink in a human brain would be an hour-long operation that is no more invasive than LASIK eye surgery, inserting a coin-sized device into the skull that would leave a tiny scar after the electrodes are inserted in the brain.
He likened the technology to being essentially a "Fitbit in your skull."

(740 posts)Perhaps Putin beat Musk to the punch by several years. Remember what all of those good American Republicans visited Russia over the 4th of July maybe they also got Putin special treatment. LOL

(5,727 posts)...I fully expected a censored cartoon of Elon with Trump's dick in his ear. But he's actually going full Frankenstein, huh?
Thanks, but I don't need a "Fitbit in my skull." It'll be interesting to see how the redcap tinhats react, though. They think Bill Gates wants to use vaccinations to implant chips in people; now Elon wants people to pay for the privilege.

(5,815 posts)However, I worked for a non-profit organization serving people with seizure disorders, such as epilepsy. My first thought was of the medical use of such a device to help control seizures for those that medication cant help or the medication side effects are too severe. It could be a game changer for some of those people.
You may now return to your discussion of the nefarious ways it can be used.
PatrickforO
(14,593 posts)I hear it. So, do you think we as a species will be wise enough to refrain from 'nefarious uses' if this application proves successful? And please understand, I'm not cutting you down - I agree this could be a game changer.
But then, in this world of end stage capitalism, and our 'profit over people' mentality based on the shareholder primacy doctrine, if they actually developed such a chip, would most of us be priced out of access to it?
For example, on the ground even now, my friends report that COVID tests, are free, but the LAB COSTS are astronomical - several people with whom I've spoken use the term 'sticker shock,' - a real capitalist gouge.
I'm thinking until we are able to successfully get rid of our greed and lust for power, our technology will always, sadly, far exceed our wisdom. When I look at Elon Musk, 'wisdom' is not the first word that comes to mind.

(6,573 posts)There is a true story about a pig worth hearing:
A woman owned a pig, who lived with her in a house. The house had a dog door so the pig could come and go as it pleased into the yard.
One day, the woman had either a stroke or a heart attack (can't remember.) She was unconscious on the floor. The pig went through the dog door, and went to the front near the street.
When a car came along, the pig went into the street and lay down in front of the car. The driver got out, whereupon the pig got up and slowly walked away, with the driver following him. In that manner, the pig brought a human to discover the downed woman, and the woman was saved.
Let them get a human volunteer for the neurolink testing. Pay them a lot of money to be a tester. Leave the pigs alone.
