Trump nominates Amy Coney Barrett as Supreme Court justice
Source: CNN
(CNN)President Donald Trump on Saturday said he is nominating Amy Coney Barrett, a conservative federal appeals court judge, to succeed the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the US Supreme Court, setting off a fierce partisan battle in the waning days of a hotly contested presidential election.
Calling it a "very proud moment indeed," Trump called Barrett a woman of "towering intellect" and "unyielding loyalty to the Constitution" who would rule "based solely on the fair reading of the law."
In a flag-bedecked Rose Garden designed to mimic Ginsburg's own nomination ceremony in 1993, Trump recounted Barrett's educational and professional background, noted her seven children and hailed her ties to another late Supreme Court justice, Antonin Scalia, for whom she clerked.
"I looked and I studied and you are very eminently qualified for this job," Trump told his nominee. "You are going to be fantastic."

(51,555 posts)Counsel representing parties on cases before the Court are crammed into tiny armless wooden chairs literally shoulder to shoulder in the well of the courtroom, a well that is about the size of the average American dining room. The audience seats behind them are similarly tiny and narrow, and highly restricted. The overall size of the SCOTUS Courtroom is dwarfed by virtually every modern appellate courtroom and needs to come into the 21st century. Its business is much too important to let this ridiculous lack of public access continue.

(15,286 posts)For ex, the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals has 14. There is no particular reason SCOTUS should have fewer judges than the Appeals Courts directly beneath them.

(111,258 posts)but she's an academic who is just short of having 3 years experience on the bench.
That should be the line of attack. DiFi fought against getting her onto the 7th Court of Appeals and got some blowback which firmed up Barrett's support among arch conservatives walking around with the Pope up their asses.
This time the concern should be judicial experience. It is the most valid one. Let somebody try to appoint her again when she's got some more experience on the bench. She is not ready for prime time.
(No, people, that isn't a slam to Catholics. I live in a heavily Catholic area of the country and they're a hell of a lot more rational about things than this twit is. Academics are all theory. She needs some practical experience to show her the world is a little more complicated than her books and church made it out to be)

(15,411 posts)They would just say we did the same thing with her.
Warpy
(111,258 posts)because she was vetted by the full Senate and not passed by party line. They'd just make themselves look like they didn't do due diligence.
Nothing else is going to work. DiFi got considerable blowback in 2017 for questioning her religious zealotry clouding her judgment.

Perhaps the Holy Spirit will enter her body during her confirmation hearings to answer questions in a tongue other than English. Wouldn't that be something to behold! It would scare the beejeebers out of most Americans.
It's also hilarious that some Catholics think the charismatic renewal is actually poorly disguised pentacostal Protestantism (!) infiltrating the church.
