Ted Cruz warns the election 'could be a bloodbath of Watergate proportions' for GOP
Source: CNBC
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, warned on Friday that Republicans could see a bloodbath of Watergate proportions if voters are angry and broke when casting their ballots next month.
Cruz blamed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for holding up a deal to provide a new round stimulus and direct payment checks to Americans during the coronavirus pandemic, although it was President Donald Trump who abruptly called off talks earlier this week.
If people are going back to work, if theyre optimistic, if theyre positive about the future, we could see a fantastic election: the president getting reelected with a big margin, Republicans winning both Houses of Congress, Cruz said in an interview on CNBCs Squawk Box.
But I also think if on Election Day, people are angry and theyve given up hope and theyre depressed, which is what Pelosi and Schumer want them to be, I think it could be a terrible election. I think we could lose the White House and both houses of Congress, that it could be a bloodbath of Watergate proportions.

(50,557 posts)I predict that, thanks to Trump's trade wars and the pandemic-induced curtailment of the economy, we are looking at a massive economic downturn early next year. As in, before May. This time it will be different: We won't be able to manipulate our way out of it by adjusting the prime rate, increasing the money supply etc. because Trump already used those measures as much as you possibly can to try to overstimulate the economy to make himself look better...and we won't be able to trade our way out of it because Trump has pissed off the rest of the world.
Biden needs to be ready to repeal every tariff Trump instituted on the first day of his presidency, and the new Democratic Congress needs to have a bill ready for him by inauguration day.

The 2020 election is going to hit the Republicans even harder (and they won't have the cushion FDR had because even with those losses the Democratic Party maintained majorities in both Houses).

(67,782 posts)...presidential/congressional elections of 1976.
Carter won by only about 50 electoral votes and one large state would have given Ford the presidency.
In the House the Democrats gained only one seat and in the Senate the republicans actually gained one seat.
Now, if he's talking about the 1974 midterm election, that's a different story. Democrats gained 49 seats in the House and 4 seats in the Senate. But that was a different dynamic, midterm election yearss are nothing like presidential election years.

I agree. I think all of the corruption, open lies and "alternative facts" will damage the GOP up and down the ticket, and I, quite frankly, don't think the GOP will recover for a good while. That gives me a much needed smile just thinking about it.
HOWEVER. . . I am so afraid of political violence, and I've said to my partner numerous times that I don't see any way it can be avoided. We live in a gun-crazy country, and when people are allowed to "open carry" in so many states and the fact that they do so just to intimidate others gives me the shudders.
