U.S. agency blocks path to in-flight airline cellphone

By David Shepardson

2 MIN READ

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said on Monday it had ended a 2013 regulatory proceeding that had sought to lift the ban on using mobile phones while in flight on U.S. airlines.

The FCC said in 2013 it would consider allowing air travelers to make mobile phone calls and text messages above 10,000 feet, but never finalized it.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai in 2017 recommended ending the proceeding. ... The commission, in adopting the recommendation three years later, noted strong opposition from U.S. airline pilots and flight attendants.

The “record is insufficient to determine any reasonable solution that would strike an appropriate balance of competing interests,” the FCC said in closing the proceeding.

That's why trains have quiet-cars where no cell phone conversations are allowed.

I hate hearing folks discussing personal and sensitive info in public places. Too many folk have no filters, or volume control, or decency, or consideration, or courtesy, or manners, or common sense.

That was the way it was, when i was in Air Ops and it makes sense. But the phone companies, make money off phone usage, so there you go. Lobbyists at work again.

Like trains, you aren’t supposed to be talking unless you get out of the passenger car, but more than once I’ve seen that ignored.

Last year, while still on the ground, a man behind us kept expressing his love and longing to the on the other side the line, was very annoying.

What is it about our society that individuals are afraid to be alone with their thoughts? Why do so many constantly need the affirmation of their "contacts?"

To the guy talking dirty and very loudly to another person supposedly on the other end of the call:

Is that phone even on, or are you just trying to annoy people?
