Georgia Republicans Want to Pass Law Requiring Photo ID for Mail-In Ballots Following 2020 Election

BY EMILY CZACHOR
Although there is no evidence to suggest fraudulent activity occurred in Georgia during November's election, the state's top Republican leaders have voiced their support for additional criteria necessary to cast ballots by mail in future races.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, both Republicans, separately vouched for new policies that would require absentee voters to submit photo identification alongside their mail ballots in remarks delivered last month, when the state certified its election results for Joe Biden.
Raffensperger, who has pushed back fiercely against Donald Trump's unproven allegations that misconduct contributed to Georgia's election outcome, called for reforming absentee ballot laws during a public address delivered November 20.
"I will work with legislators to find a solution that allows us to use the same security measures for votes by mail as we have for in-person voting," he said. "That would include a photo ID requirement. We know this works."

(7,391 posts)Just counter the MF's with a law that fully supports people's full access to voting, for FREE.
Okay, you want photo ID for voters, then PROVIDE IT!

(183 posts)You can argue that some of the requirements are onerous for someone of limited means, but a FREE voter ID card is available.
What if I don't have one of the six acceptable forms of Photo ID?
The State of Georgia offers a free ID Card. An ID Card can be issued at any county registrar's office free of charge.
To receive a voter identification card at the county registrar's office, the voter must provide:
A photo identity document or approved non-photo identity document that includes full legal name and date of birth.
Documentation showing the voter's date of birth.
Evidence that the applicant is a registered voter.
Documentation showing the applicant's name and residential address.
OR
A Voter ID card can be issued at any Georgia Department of Driver Services office free of charge.
To receive a free Georgia voter identification card at Georgia Driver Services, voters must provide:
An original or certified document to prove WHO YOU ARE such as a Birth Certificate or Passport.
Your SOCIAL SECURITY CARD.
Two documents showing your RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS such as a Bank Statement or Utility Bill.
If you've had a NAME CHANGE, then you'll also need to bring a document to prove that, such as a Marriage License.
Signed Affidavit.
Evidence that you are a registered voter.

(7,391 posts)It is still difficult for many to prove themselves, I get it. And not everyone that votes is on the Utility Bill, say a young adult living with others that are on the Utility Bill. I am sure it is part of the GOTV to help people get the proving documents they need. What a hassle.

(44,974 posts)You can't stick your driver's license in the envelope with your ballot because you actually need it.
If they want a photo copy, not everybody has a scanner or access to a photo copy machine. They just want to add extra hurdles for people to jump through.

(42,165 posts)people at every mailbox in the state and anyone who mails a ballot has to show the person an ID. 24/7, since you can mail something at any time. It makes sense to me.
Or better, every mailbox has facial recognition like at the airport. How much could that possibly cost?

(11,862 posts)a photo id with its ballot from their home, it needs to back off.
Maybe make sure each voter has a video camera on which they can provide a selfie, and apply it to an envelope....BUT how do they know the photo is REALLY the voter?

(2,636 posts)When I move, I fill out a new voter registraiton. The local registrar of voters checks my information, including ID< and then sends a card. I'm registered. My name and address appear on the rolls and I have to verbally verify my address and name, and sign.
Even voting absentee this time, I had to make a request on an application for said ballot.
How in the hell can absentee ballots require ID?
I've never seen so much hue and cry over massive turn out. They've gerrymandered the country, and they still lost by 7 million votes.

(19,864 posts)voter and compares signature on ballot envelope to the signature on file when voter registered. That should be sufficient.
Some poor folks can't afford the $XX to get a state ID card. This is more voter suppression in my opinion.

(50,299 posts)It's not like an ID would be hard to fake as you sit at your computer requesting a ballot. Assuming, of course, you approach the whole thing with criminal intent. The problem with the GOP is they don't want all authorized voters to vote. People vote and they lose.
