GOP leadership rejects resolution acknowledging Biden as President-elect

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)Congressional Republican leaders rejected a resolution that asserted that Joe Biden is president-elect, the latest effort by the Hill GOP to refuse to accept the election results even though it's been clear for weeks that President Donald Trump lost.

The rejection came Tuesday in a private meeting after House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer offered a motion to affirm that it is preparing for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Rules Committee Chairman Roy Blunt of Missouri voted with House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy in blocking the motion, effectively preventing the inaugural committee from publicly accepting that the upcoming inauguration will be for Biden. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, the ranking Democrat on the Rules Committee, voted with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Hoyer voting in favor.

"The extent to which Republicans are refusing to accept the outcome of the election and recognize Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as our next President and Vice President is astounding," Hoyer said in a statement. "Their continued deference to President Trump's post-election temper tantrums threatens our democracy and undermines faith in our system of elections ... Republicans are refusing even to allow (Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies) to say that President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris will be inaugurated on January 20, even when there is no serious dispute over that fact."

If the Republican Party does not change and Democrats are not able to win huge numbers of young people to the party, we will continue to slide into oligarchy and eventually third-world status as our infrastructure crumbles and our healthcare becomes so outrageously expensive that only the wealthy can afford it. I shouldn’t worry though because Republicans will ensure that we never do anything about climate change, so much of the country will become unlivable in a few years anyway. I don’t know how we kill the Trump Party, but it really, really needs to die.

What is happening is NOT unique to the Trump admin -- look back to how Republicans gerrymandered and stripped Democratic governors of power. Start wtih North Carolina -- Rethuglicans seized power in 2010 and they don't fuck around.

He doesn't see it as Biden's inauguration stage. He see's it as his. And if he keeps up the fight, that eventually he'll get what he's entitled to. Never underestimate the breadth of Trump's self delusion.

Republicans - the entire party and their constituency within the American public - have adopted a new standard of operation where any election they win is "a clear mandate and the will of the people" (no matter how small the win) and every election they lose "is illegitimate and a result of electoral malfeasance by the other side" (no matter how big the loss). A full implementation of totalitarian, minority rule (with them in charge) still qualifies as "democracy" in the heads of these shitty, evil little bastards.

This is dangerous and signals the end of the American experiment. No hyperbole - I really believe this.

The UK is made up of four essentially independent countries. Each has a lot more independence within the UK than a state does within the US. I feel the only way we'll be able to continue is with a devolution of sorts into more autonomous federal districts where we get to interpret the constitution our own way and let these intellectually and emotionally stunted persons have their own lands where they can carry on with their regressive, 15th century "superiority".

I really want to be compassionate toward my fellow citizens with whom I have so much disagreement. I could agree to disagree 20 years ago.

But, no longer. I've run out of shits to give. I feel terrible.
