Republicans plot attempt to deny Biden presidency on House floor

Source: RawStory

According to a report from the New York Times, hardcore supporters of Donald Trump who serve in the House are willing to attempt to deny the transfer of power to President-elect Joe Biden if Donald Trump gives them a thumbs-up to proceed.

With the president insisting on Saturday during a Fox News interview that “It’s not over,” and Biden would be an “illegitimate president,” a few Republicans are making plans to use the rules of the House to contest the election results.

“As the president continues to refuse to concede, a small group of his most loyal backers in Congress are plotting a final-stage challenge on the floor of the House of Representatives in early January to try to reverse Mr. Biden’s victory,” the Times reports. “Constitutional scholars and even members of the president’s own party say the effort is all but certain to fail. But the looming battle on Jan. 6 is likely to culminate in a messy and deeply divisive spectacle that could thrust Vice President Mike Pence into the excruciating position of having to declare once and for all that Mr. Trump has indeed lost the election.”

According to the report, the effort is being led by Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) who has amplified the president’s accusations of voter fraud despite a complete lack of evidence.

But as the president continues to refuse to concede, a small group of his most loyal backers in Congress is plotting a final-stage challenge on the floor of the House of Representatives in early January to try to reverse Mr. Biden’s victory.

Constitutional scholars and even members of the president’s own party say the effort is all but certain to fail. But the looming battle on Jan. 6 is likely to culminate in a messy and deeply divisive spectacle that could thrust Vice President Mike Pence into the excruciating position of having to declare once and for all that Mr. Trump has indeed lost the election.

The effort is being led by Representative Mo Brooks, Republican of Alabama, a backbench conservative. Along with a group of allies in the House, he is eyeing challenges to the election results in five different states — Arizona, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Georgia and Wisconsin — where they claim varying degrees of fraud or illegal voting took place, despite certification by the voting authorities and no evidence of widespread impropriety.

The dilemma is particularly acute for Mr. Pence, who is eyeing his own presidential run in 2024. As president of the Senate, he has the constitutionally designated task of opening and tallying envelopes sent from all 50 states and announcing their electoral results.

An objection must be approved by a vote from both the House and the Senate to go forward. Dems have a majority in the House. The BS, if it gets that far, will stop there.

A senator would have to join a House member in objecting to a state’s slate of votes, and the narrow Republican majority in the Senate would have to stick together to approve the objection. But even if both of those things occurred, the Democratic-held House would not go along, and because both chambers must agree to an objection, the effort would fail.

than it actually happening. They will need a fifth grader to help Mike Pence count to over 270. I don't know if there will be enough senators to try and make Trump repig dictator though. Even Nebraska's Sasse won't play along and there are four others who accept Biden as president elect.

The Republicans plan to exercise their statutory right to object to counting certain states' votes. When they do, their objections will be voted on separately by the House and Senate. To actually accept the objection, both houses have to approve it. That won't happen because the House will reject each objection. The Senate might do so as well.

The Republicans know that they can't actually deny Biden th presidency. They're just doing this to grandstand for the asshole in the White House.

It won't impact the outcome but there is one interesting scenario that could arise. The Senate will b 50-48 when the votes are counted (I'm assuming that the Georgia special election won't be finalized and certified in one day). I expect a few Senate Republicans not to go along with the objections. At very least, I don't see Romney going along. It would be amusing (albeit highly unlikely) if the vote in the Senate ended up 49-49, and Pence has to cast a deciding vote -- to keep up his cred with the Trumpers, he'll have to vote to uphold the objection, no matter how unseemly that will be.

And it will be extremely satisfying, at the end of the process, to see and hear Mike Pence have to announce the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have officially been elected President and VP of the United States (unless of course, as is entirely possible and even likely, that Pence suddenly develops a tummy ache and leaves the chamber so he doesn't have to be the one making the announcement).

Every one of them is up for reelection in 2022, and Democrats need to hang this antidemocratic action around their necks for all the voters to see. Citizens have a right to vote. Legislators do not have a right to throw those votes out when multiple courts have ruled that there is no justification for doing so. Democrats can rightly question their patriotism and their veracity in pledging to protect and defend the US Constitution.

They are blind as bats to the political fallout. And they have their heads in the sand like ostriches.

Obviously Republicans had very big plans to damage America further, because they're not satisfied with what Trump has done, and they're not accepting a return to normalcy with Biden.

They are seeking a Reign of Terror.
