Hawaii volcano: Kilauea erupts on state's Big Island

Source: The Independent

Kilauea volcano has erupted on Hawaii's Big Island, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The eruption began late on Sunday within the within Halema'uma'u crater, shortly after 9.30pm local time.

Observers at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) noticed the eruption started within the crater at Kīlauea's summit, according to the USGS, who was in contact with the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

In an update, the USGS said "An eruption has commenced within Kīlauea's summit caldera. The situation is rapidly evolving and HVO will issue another statement when more information is available."

The HVO has raised Kīlauea's volcano alert level to "WARNING" level, and the aviation alert level is now colour code "RED".

including a 7.8 magnitude. There was also a big swarm in and around Puerto Rico including a 6.4 magnitude back in January (followed by piles of 5+ aftershocks), plus a 5.7 right near Salt Lake City, UT.

And don't forget the extraordinary record hurricane season with 30 named storms (which blew past 2005's previous record 27 named storms), and which went deep into the Greek alphabet naming scheme. Louisiana got hit by 4 different ones.

This is 2020. Takes a lot more than a run of the mill volcano to get noticed in 2020.

Now if it starts spewing giant murder hornets or flying sharks, then we can start worrying...a little.
