UK records its highest number of new Covid infections, with 53,135 cases

Source: The Guardian.

The UK has recorded a dramatic jump to more than 53,000 Covid-19 cases – its biggest ever daily case count, one day after it crossed 40,000 cases for the first time.

Cases have been on the rise as the fast-spreading variant of the coronavirus makes its presence felt. The UK recorded 53,135 new daily infections, as well as 414 deaths.

While the high numbers may be in part due to a lag in the data that was not reported in full over the Christmas period, Public Health England said the figures were “largely a reflection of a real increase”.

The new UK variant, christened B117, was discovered during an investigation into why coronavirus cases in Kent continued to rise during the November lockdown. Scientists say they have high confidence that B117 has a transmission advantage – and a modelling study by London School of Hygiene and Tropical medicine researchers has estimated it is about 56% more transmissible than previous variants.

The righties will be screeching "lockdowns don't work" "FREEDOM". They already have been for many months. As well as "we're all going to get it eventually", which I've been thinking is entirely plausible except for a relative handful kept super-isolated.

Especially considering the CDC about a month ago said that for every counted case, there are 7 uncounted ones. (If true, about 48% of the U.S. has been infected -- see the Worldometer link below -- cases: 60,126 cases per million, multiply by 8 and its 481,000 per million). So it becomes a desperate struggle just to keep it such that hospitals aren't overwhelmed by too many at one time. Hopefullly of course enough vaccinations occur soon enough, and they really work ... against all strains.

The map in the Guardian article is very interesting, it is color coded by cases PER CAPITA, and is very concentrated in the southeast.

Number of people in hospitals for Covid also just surpassed its prior peak (April 9)

55.1 daily new cases per 100,000, 7 day moving average, Just behind the U.S. 55.2

The world map near the top of the page is well worth a look: U.K. and the U.S. and Sweden are among a very few burgundy colored ones. Netherlands too at 58 per 100k daily new cases.
