Giuliani says he's working on Trump's impeachment defense, would argue voter fraud claims

Source: ABC News

President Donald Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani tells ABC News he's working as part of the president's defense team in his upcoming second impeachment trial -- and that he's prepared to argue that the president's claims of widespread voter fraud did not constitute incitement to violence because the widely-debunked claims are true.

"I'm involved right now … that's what I'm working on," Giuliani told ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl.

A few hours later, Giuliani -- who led the president's efforts to overturn the 2020 election results -- was spotted at the White House.

Giuliani's involvement in Trump's impeachment defense comes as many of the lawyers involved in the president's first impeachment, including White House counsel Pat Cipollone and his deputies and outside lawyers Jay Sekulow and Jane and Marty Raskin, do not plan to return for the second trial.

If what Trump says about fraud is true, it's ok to get people to storm the Capital and kill people?
No one thinks it's ok, but what if Rudy can't prove it's true?

I'm sure he will bring up all of the debunked claims that have been rejected every time they were brought up in Court because they provided no supporting evidence. But even if the debunked claims had merit it would not be a defense for the riot that left 6 people dead. All of the criminal charges would be unchanged. And it hardly addresses that impeachment charge of inciting insurrection - which is second only to treason in seriousness. Indeed, I would hope that the Chief Justice would step in and challenge the relevance of the defense. Where do they go then? There is no exculpatory evidence to clear Trump. If it wasn't Trump that incited the riot, who was it? Duh!

The vote to convict won't be nearly that much, but this defense will associate a vote to acquit with belief in the lie. So far there is no Congressional penalty for furthering the stolen election narrative, but there is one from corporate donors already in place.
