Fleeing the pandemic and two hurricanes, thousands of migrants walk toward the U.S.
Source: LA times (Yahoo)
Any Ortega has not been home since a pair of hurricanes devastated Honduras in November, leaving hundreds of thousands of people displaced. Now, Ortega, 30, is among the latest group of Honduran migrants and asylum seekers making their way north through neighboring Guatemala toward Mexico where the government has fortified border security with thousands of National Guard troops and toward the U.S. border hundreds of miles to the north.
This caravan could represent a resurgence of such efforts as President-elect Joe Biden, who has vowed to reform President Trump's hard-line immigration policies, takes office Wednesday. For Trump, migrant caravans were a vivid symbol of what he called an out-of-control immigration system, and his administration moved to clamp down while successfully pressuring Mexico to stop many U.S.-bound migrants long before they reached the border.
Biden's election has raised hopes in Central America devastated by last years hurricane-driven floods, in addition to chronic issues of poverty and gang violence that the incoming administration may ease its policies for asylum seekers and other migrants. This caravan could prove an early test for the new administration, as will relations with the Honduran government, led by President Juan Orlando Hernández, who, along with his security forces, has been implicated in three U.S. drug-trafficking cases.

(71 posts)Why now?
I'm not sure how helpful we are able to be at this time. We need a breather to set our country on a different track.
I don't think now is the time for large groups showing up here right now as some of us are considering fleeing this country for asylum elsewhere!

Besides better they come here and get the paperwork to prove they are here legally rather than come illegally and risk being exploited and mistreated.

(71 posts)I don't disagree with this statement at all and I would be the first to welcome them.
I just don't know how ready our systems are to embrace them at this moment.
I am a social worker by profession and if the systems aren't up to par it is going to be difficult.
I have not kept up with this so I cannot answer to our readiness.
I also think that there just might be some behind the scenes manipulations.

(71 posts)Thank you!
I have been a lurker for many years. I had a family tragedy in 2008 and just decided to read and watch as the years went by on this forum and others.
My son was killed in a car accident and my brother died by his own hand. I know what it feels like to live in tragedy.
In the last year or so I have felt better about engaging again.
But I do tend to be a bit cautious about joining in .... as the years can testify too.

(10,011 posts)Countries like El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala not only have the most corrupt leaders and gang violence, but climate change has caused problems for farmers and their food supply. These countries are among the poorest on the planet, and they will never get better with corrupt leaders who take whatever wealth there is for themselves.

Trump of course added yet another layer of hardship and mismanagement to our treatment of the area.

(47,487 posts)A senior Biden transition official is warning migrants hoping to cross the southern border into the U.S. during the early days of the new administration that now is not the time to come.
Theres help on the way, but now is not the time to make the journey, an unnamed Biden official said, NBC News reported.
The Biden administration is looking to end the Trump administrations policy of requiring that migrants wait in Mexico as immigration courts consider their asylum applications. Those who have been waiting at the border will be considered first for entry over migrants who only recently arrived. Additionally, the Biden administration will scrap the stricter restrictions the previous administration imposed on asylum seekers, which limit who is eligible for entry.
However, any immigration legislation proposed by the Biden administration will address illegal immigrants living in the U.S. rather than new migrants arriving at the border, the official said.
