Trump retains overwhelming support from Republicans after deadly U.S. Capitol attack: NBC poll

Source: CNBC

The numbers show that Trump continues to have a strong hold on the loyalty of Republican voters even on his way out the door. Republicans were evenly divided on the question of whether they are primarily supporters of Trump or the party.

Among Republicans who primarily support Trump, his job approval stands at 98%. For those who primarily support the party, it is 81%.

For most in the party, the attack on the Capitol, which left five dead, did not affect their support for the president, while many said that it had bolstered their approval.

Two-thirds of Trump supporters said the president’s comments and actions since the Jan. 6 attack did not shift their views, while nearly a third — 28% — said that the events had reinforced their thinking. Only 5% said they now regretted their vote.

The attack on the capitol actually increased some Republicans approval of Trump?! The polarization between Democrats and Republicans runs deep and appears to be resistant to change. What kind of unity can we realistically forge?

The results from this poll don't seem to match well with other polls that have been posted on DU. It shows a 43% overall approval rating.

won't admit how wrong they were to vote and support for years, a candidate so obviously criminally flawed.
It marks them as doddering idiots or worse, traitors to democracy.

America has degraded to the point where many people consider criminal scum like Trump to be heroes. Fifty years ago, Trump would have been seen as the cheap, corrupt landlord he is and shunned by all elements of decent society, but in 21st Century America he is loved by way too many people.

Make no mistake. These people do not think they are wrong to support Trump. They believe he is a wonderful man who should be loved and respected by all.

The repub party IS NOTHING BUT A CULT. They will stand by their cult leader to the end of his days, and then they will worship him as a martyr til the day they die.

I'd love to see all major media regularly state for the next few years this headline: "Republicans in major disarray" .

weak and extremely stupid and gullible a lot of ameriKKKans are. Hell people followed Hitler. This poll is not surprising. President Obama scared the shit out of the white supremacists/racists when he was elected. This current state of affairs concerning the January 6th coup is a direct reflection of the 180-degree turn to racism and longing for an all-white America that the politics of this country took after President Obama. And that was immediately after President Obama's presidency ended. ALL the racist, white supremacists, nazis, KKK, scammers, racist Senators and House members who had mobilized against President Obama's presidency stole (alleged) an election for this pig leaving office. The pigs still following him would follow him into any WW2 Dresden firebombing if it meant all brown people were to be caged, expelled, executed.

To hell's everlasting fire with ALL repubiKKKans.

This is an ugly view. They would rather have violence than support our system of government. Recall the unity following 9-11, the Iran hostage crisis, OPEC embargo, JFK's assassination.

They would rather be violent and right, than peaceful and wrong. Do you think it's the pandemic? Was some of this rage normally vitiated vicariously in major league sports, and now with the pandemic there is no outlet other than virtual?

or they just voted that way or they self identify as such? If they are just talking about registered republicans. or even voters who voted for trump..... then 67% of that could actually be a pretty small percentage of the American people. It would then not be much of a surprise that they havent budged much, cos they are going to be the most committed, the "true believers."

I vote democratic about 99.9% of the time but if someone was to ask if I was a ""democrat" I would say no, cos I am not an actual party member.

Other polling that shows approval rates down in the mid 20s across all the US population sounds about right. I would disregard the polls of the true believers - they are not going to change their minds- ever.
