Smartmatic files $2.7 billion defamation suit against Fox News over bogus election-fraud claims

Source: Washington Post

Smartmatic, an election technology company, has followed through on a threat to sue the parent company of Fox News over comments
made on the network suggesting the network participated in fraud during the Nov. 3 presidential election.

The company filed suit on Thursday in the Supreme Court of the State of New York County, seeking $2.7 billion for defamation and disparagement and accusing Fox News of fomenting a "disinformation campaign against Smartmatic." "One of the biggest challenges in the Information Age is disinformation," Smartmatic chief executive Antonio Mugica said in announcing the suit. "Fox is responsible for this disinformation campaign, which has damaged democracy worldwide and irreparably harmed Smartmatic and other stakeholders who contribute to modern elections."

Fox News personalities Maria Bartiromo, Lou Dobbs and Jeanine Pirro were directly named in the suit, along with Fox News guests Sidney Powell and Rudy Giuliani. They were among commentators who suggested Smartmatic and another voting tech company, Dominion Voting Systems, participated in a conspiracy to steal the election from former president Donald Trump, despite no evidence of such a plot.

In a statement in response to the lawsuit, Fox News Media said it "is committed to providing the full context of every story with in-depth reporting and clear opinion," adding, "We are proud of our 2020 election coverage and will vigorously defend this meritless lawsuit in court." Back in December, Smartmatic had put Fox News on notice with a 20-page legal demand letter asking for "a full and complete retraction of all false and defamatory statements and reports published by Fox News."

and use it to hammer Smartmatic and Dominion into the ground. Yeah, hoses will be the only way to deliver drinking water to them.

I anticipate a rush to retract and apologize, quickly before this case gathers momentum. The action that breaks the back of the Trump's Big Lie.

Lawsuits, lots of lawsuits. Hold these people responsible for their many lies and inciting people to violence. Nothing else seems to work.

Voting technology company Smartmatic files $2.7 billion lawsuit against Fox News, Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell over 'disinformation campaign'

New York (CNN)A voting technology company swept up in baseless conspiracy theories about the 2020 election filed a monster $2.7 billion lawsuit on Thursday against Fox News, some of the network's star hosts, and pro-Trump attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell, alleging the parties worked in concert to wage a "disinformation campaign" that has jeopardized its very survival.

"We have no choice," Antonio Mugica, the chief executive and founder of Smartmatic, told CNN Business in an interview about the company's decision to file the lawsuit. "The disinformation campaign that was launched against us is an obliterating one. For us, this is existential, and we have to take action."

The lawsuit, filed in New York state court, accused Fox, Giuliani, Powell and hosts Lou Dobbs, Maria Bartiromo, and Jeanine Pirro of intentionally lying about Smartmatic in an effort to mislead the public into the false belief that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from former President Donald Trump.
"They needed a villain," the lawsuit said. "They needed someone to blame. They needed someone whom they could get others to hate. A story of good versus evil, the type that would incite an angry mob, only works if the storyteller provides the audience with someone who personifies evil."

Democracy has suffered from wholesale perpetuation of lies. These lawsuits are shutting the RW echo chamber down, at least in this one respect.

"The Earth is round. Two plus two equals four. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won the 2020 election for President and Vice President of the United States," the lawsuit said. "The election was not stolen, rigged, or fixed. These are facts. They are demonstrable and irrefutable."
