Mitch McConnell Says He'd 'Absolutely' Back Donald Trump In 2024 Presidential Race

Source: huff post

02/25/2021 08:52 pm ET

It’s a stunning turnaround from his angry comments this month that Trump was “practically and morally responsible” for the deadly storming of the Capitol.

In a breathtaking turnabout, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Thursday on Fox News that he would “absolutely” back Donald Trump for president in 2024 if he becomes the Republican Party’s nominee.

The startling support came less than two weeks after McConnell’s angry slam of the former president as “practically and morally responsible” for inciting last month’s deadly storming of the U.S. Capitol. “There’s no question,” McConnell said. “The people that stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president.” He called Trump’s actions “a disgraceful dereliction of duty.”

But asked by Fox News host Bret Baier if he would support Trump if he wins the party’s nomination for president in 2024, McConnell said enthusiastically: “The nominee of the party? Absolutely.”

McConnell also noted, however: “There’s a lot to happen between now and ’24. I’ve got at least four members that I think are planning on running for president .... Should be a wide-open race.”.......................

He was asked if he would support the Republican nominee not if he would like Trump to be the Republican nominee.

McConnell, lacking in morality, made the political calculation. Had he any morals he would have said he would not support Trump.

But he is a conservative Republican thus his response is in keeping with his belief structure.

He may not have been making a false statement, but he was being wretchedly, cowardly, craven in his lust for power. That's not honesty. He doesn't have an honest bone in his body. He needs a methodical work-over with dimensional lumber. Stat.

jerk that only has his own power and ambitions in mind. Sadly, if Trump is not indicted or brought to justice he will be the presumtpive nominee in 2024 - you can bank on it.

The guy who is a serious national security threat and fomented an armed insurrection to overthrow an election (and our government) is okay by Mitch. Republicans have become a clear and direct threat to our democratic republic. At the rate they’re going, how much longer will our country survive?

He probably believes Trump will be mired in legal problems, and possibly be convicted of one or more felonies between now and then, and thus will not be the Republican nominee in 2024. So he can pander to Trump's base now and change his position later if the situation warrants it.
And, if Trump's is in prison and can't run in 2024, he can talk about how poor Donnie was badly abused by the legal system. He can rally Trump's base to the Republican candidates so a Republican legislature can be elected to proceed with an agenda that Trump would support, and a Republican president can be elected who would have the power to pardon Trump.
This is typical, conniving, McConnell. What he wants is Republican control without all the shit that Trump brings to the Presidency.
I think McConnell's earlier statements condemning Trump reflect his true feelings, but he would never let that stand in the way of reascending to the Senate Majority Leader position.
It's all about power for him. Trump is just a means to an end.

All the Q people use this simple calculation: Do I get more votes with trump or without him? As the "base" continues to dwindle, the "with trump" side will diminish.

getting rid of Trump would be good for the GOP.
He's ALWAYS got other motives behind what he says.
He lies. He's Republican. That's what they do.

The GOP will now do everything in their power to make sure the US does not improve under Biden.
