Democrats are often accused of not being as fiery or as ballsy as their Republican colleagues. Theres the ever-brave Squad, plus some new congresspeople whove followed in their footsteps. But by and large they tend to stay low-key, hoping often unsuccessfully that theyll guilt trip those on the other side of the aisle to do the right thing. Then theres Tim Ryan.
You may not know who that is. Hes not a household name. Hes just some Democratic representative from Ohio. But on Monday as the House was giving a second vote on Joe Bidens $1.9 trillion pandemic relief package, which received few of their votes he had enough. After they raised a stink about bills seeking to raise the minimum wage to support unions, not to mention being more worried about culture war grandstanding over the Muppets, over Mr. Potato Head, over Pepé Le Pew, and over Dr. Seusss, he took them all to the woodshed.

(153,174 posts)why the fuck is *THE* most delicate body part used to describe courage? ENOUGH of that sexist bullshit.

(16,201 posts)Basically you wouldn't normally expose vulnerable parts of the body to damage, so it takes courage to do that. It's a method of saying they put everything on the line. It's similar in usage to gutsy, because the gut is normally protected/shielded by most animals since it doesn't have a rib cage or other bones to protect it. Exposing ones gut is to risk evisceration.

(49,032 posts)The sexist assumption implicit is that one has to have "balls" to be brave or courageous or strong.
Every time somebody says "so and so has balls", the statement makes no sense unless the speaker is assuming one has to be male. It implicity says that male anatomy is desirable.
Especially bad is the sexism that says "you need balls to stand up to Republicans" or some such. As if ovaries are are disqualifying.
You could be less sexist and say "gonads", but then why the reference to sex organs at all?
Just say "guts" and be done with sexualization and sexism.
What year is this? 1961?

(49,032 posts)Why the sex obsession?
We want to get sex out of politics and positions of power. So don't drag it in where it doesn't belong.
Just drop it entirely. It is archaic and harmful! Get with the 21st century.
All this talk about honouring LGBTQ+ is just talk unless you really apply it.

(49,032 posts)A person can be a woman without ovaries. A person can be a man with out balls.
A PERSON IS A PERSON without regard to SEX ORGANS.

(6,265 posts)you can never read another person's mind. I would never leave anyone out of any debate no matter their sexual orientation or whether they have had a hysterectomy or not. You completely muddied the point here. Have a good day when you leave the room.

(49,032 posts)Yes, we can't read thoughts. So use language carefully, as if people only have the language they hear or read and as if they can't read thoughts. Believe it.
Supporting LGBTQ+ means really thinking things through and dropping sexist language.
It is sexist to use sexual metaphors in non-sexual situations. It has no place.
Casual language has consequences! Apply progressive thinking to everything. Make it a habit. Purge sexist language from one's own thoughts.
Be the change you want to have happen. In things big and small.

(408 posts)I've been trying to catch myself when I use terms for genitalia as a derogative. I'm male, but I've found I actually use male genitalia offensively far more than female. Most commonly just thinking of someone as a dick(not you or anyone here, just explaining.) It's really difficult to train yourself out of it.

(18,640 posts)The 3 minute speeches were a signature of the late Jim Traficant's tenure in the house. Most recall his famous "Beam me up" line at the end of one rage back in the '80s.
A young Tim Ryan staffed for him when he was fresh out of college, and yelling at Congress about the working man is one good thing he carried from that experience.
I don't doubt his sincerity one bit.
