Georgia lawmaker won't face charges for voting bill protest

Source: AP

ATLANTA (AP) — A district attorney in Atlanta said Wednesday that she will not pursue charges against a Georgia state lawmaker who was arrested during a protest of the state's sweeping new election law.

“After reviewing all of the evidence, I have decided to close this matter,” Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said in an emailed statement. “It will not be presented to a grand jury for consideration of indictment, and it is now closed.”

Rep. Park Cannon, a Democrat from Atlanta, was arrested March 25 after she knocked on the door to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp's office while he was on live television speaking about the voting bill he had just signed into law. Police charged her with obstruction of law enforcement and disruption of the General Assembly. She was released from jail later that evening.

“While some of Representative Cannon’s colleagues and the police officers involved may have found her behavior annoying, such sentiment does not justify a presentment to a grand jury of the allegations in the arrest warrants or any other felony charges,” Willis said.

The sheer assholery of that whole episode needs to be fully exposed and subjected to the public ridicule it so richly deserves!

It would also really piss off Kemp, which is a nice added bonus.

...she knew this case was a loser; not prosecutable. Absurd to attempt or even consider 'cause taking it on would've nailed her butt to the wall and left her bleeding badly. Still, 'nice try, no thanks, case closed' may put it to bed for now, but yeah still gonna get sued beyotch. Ya think Kemp and his minions are beginning to have second thoughts yet?

That case was absurd. She didn't do anything wrong. She was doing her job. The racist, (R) governor and members of the legislature are the ones who broke the law. Haul them off in handcuffs, and put them in the slammer.

This (R) s*#t is repugnant, and the idiots are so blatant in their smug racist activities, it's the epitome of a all that is wrong with the right wingers grasp of what democracy under our constitution is about.

Sanity prevails, finally. The whole arrest was bullshit.

I believe a white woman would not have been arrested.

That wrongly-arrested representative SHOULD sue! And it looks like they roughed her up, too, if I’m not mistaken.

Oh MAN should she sue!

WHATEVER costs them unexpected/unwanted extra spending and lost time, and ties them up so they can’t get much else done, the BETTER.

15. Lawmaker arrested for knocking on governor's door urges Americans to 'keep knocking'

Georgia state Rep. Park Cannon, the Democrat who was arrested for knocking on Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp's door as he signed the state's voting bill, says she will "keep knocking."

"I ask you, Georgia, to keep knocking," Cannon said at a news conference Thursday outside the state capitol in Atlanta. "America, keep knocking. All of the marginalized people, keep knocking."

On March 25, Cannon repeatedly knocked on Kemp's office door at the statehouse while he gave remarks after signing into law new voting requirements in Georgia following the results of the 2020 election that flipped the traditionally red state to blue.

Cannon was put in handcuffs and forcibly removed from the statehouse.
