New Mexico ends qualified immunity
Source: MSN.com
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) signed a bill Wednesday ending qualified immunity for all government workers, including police.
Grisham signed the New Mexico Civil Rights Act, which ends the use of qualified immunity as a defense for depriving a person of their civil rights, her office said.
Qualified immunity shields state and local police from civil suits unless they violated a clearly established constitutional right, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
New Mexico is the first state to end qualified immunity for all public bodies, the New Mexico House Democrats said on Twitter. However, it is not the only state to end the practice in some capacity.

I am so happy about this. Finally, nobody is above the law.

Make police buy professional liability insurance like every other profession.
Insurance companies would vet them & refuse a great many!

(3,527 posts)This directly impacts my family and friends, not to mention myself. Our oppressive policing has left a pallor across the state over the past 20+ years.
Honestly, it feels like we are gaining "a freedom"! I know that sounds weird, but calling it a right doesn't have enough emotional punch. Encountering law enforcement around here is frightening...and I'm white!!! I've always believed that accountability is what has been lacking. This "qualified immunity" loophole is what has attracted white supremacists and racists to become law enforcement officers.
cruise citizens bammeat! It's way too long getting done. But Nice Going New Mexico. I believe no one is, above the law. But those maki g and enforcing or laws should be the example if how law abiding they are as an example. The should obey the the law ultimately better than the citizens, yet those people are usually criminals themselves
