Source: KGO-TV

490 million has been raised for WE Charity across the U.S. since 2011, according to the charity's tax forms filed with the Internal Revenue Service.

Since the brothers appeared on Oprah in 2000, WE Charity claims 1,500 schools and school rooms have been built across the world with funds.

"Over the years, WE Charity has provided youth volunteerism programs to 18,000 schools in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, empowering young people to help more than 5,000 causes. In California, WE Charity serves 1,400 schools and educational groups with free curricular programs supporting youth service, youth mental health, and trauma-informed learning programs."

He was part of a group from the SF Bay Area that attended We Day in Vancouver about ten years, and he participated in Free the Children summer camps and other activities. We saw Martin Sheen at an airport not long after the Vancouver event, and my son approached him to tell him how much he enjoyed his We Day speech in Vancouver... and Sheen said he really appreciated that, and they both needed to keep working to make the world better for everyone. (Sheen was really nice, and very "normal," and insisted I get in a photo he took with my kids...and volunteered his son to take a photo of all of us...and he said he loved my children's names, which of course, sealed the deal on me becoming a fangirl.)

By high school, my son switched to volunteering with a different youth organization, but I've always thought highly of this one. I hope at least some of what we thought they were accomplishing was true. I do remember they had some summer service trips to volunteer abroad that seemed pretty expensive.
