WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump sought to position himself as the Republican Party kingmaker on Saturday, telling party donors he will help them win seats in 2022 congressional elections but shed no new light on whether he will seek a second term in 2024.
Trump played host to a dinner at his Mar-a-Lago Club for Republican National Committee donors who are spending the weekend charting the future course of the party in Palm Beach, Florida.
"We are gathered tonight to talk about the future of the Republican Party - and what we must do to set our candidates on a course to victory," Trump said, according to a prepared text of his speech to the group seen by Reuters.
"I stand before you this evening filled with confidence that in 2022, we are going to take back the House (of Representatives) and we are going to reclaim the Senate. And then in 2024, a Republican candidate is going to win the White House," he said.

No Donny this is your latest scam. Have people send you money that you promise to forward to GOP candidates while you keep most of it as a so called management fee.

(4,533 posts)Because they have increased the number of state legislatures they control since the last census in 2010. They will draw new voting district lines to favor Republicans even more than now. A tsunami of democratic voters is headed our way as young voters replace old ones but it will not hit land until after 2022.

(9,986 posts)And since the Roberts court gutted the Voting Rights Act, there is nothing to stop them unless Manchin gets off his pedestal and votes to get rid of the filibuster so the new voting law can pass.
Texas has seen some districts flip to Democrats as big cities grew and more people moved to the suburbs, so they will carve up the districts to give a few seats to Democrats and give the rest to themselves. We need a requirement that districts represent around the same number of citizens rather than huge districts for the Democrats and sparsely populated rural areas joined with slices of suburbs so as to deny Democrats any opportunity for election.

(57,434 posts)Trump slashes at McConnell as he reiterates election falsehoods at Republican event

Trump spent much of the speech, with many senators in the room, lashing into his former ally in personal terms, often to cheers from the partys top donors. He falsely claimed that he won the Senate election for McConnell in Kentucky and attacked his wife, Elaine Chao, who served as Trumps transportation secretary.
I hired his wife. Did he ever say thank you? Trump said. He then mocked Chao for resigning in response to the Jan. 6 events and Trumps behavior that day.
She suffered so greatly, he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. He later called McConnell a stone cold loser. A spokesman for McConnell could not immediately be reached.
The speech was light on his actual presidency, which some aides had wanted him to address, and delivered more of a familiar litany of grievances that seemed to animate the crowd. Many of his claims were false or misleading.
