Pete Buttigieg To Reluctant Evangelicals: 'Maybe A Vaccine Is Part Of God's Plan'

Source: Huffington Post

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Sunday encouraged evangelical Christians who are reluctant to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to consider that the shots might be a ďpart of Godís plan.Ē

ďState of the UnionĒ host Jake Tapper asked Buttigieg, an Episcopalian, about the large portion of white evangelicals who say they wonít get a COVID-19 vaccine. About 40% of white evangelical Protestants said they likely would not get vaccinated, according to a poll conducted last month, compared to about 25% of all Americans, 28% of white mainline Protestants and 27% of Protestants who are not white.

ďIíve heard people I care about saying, you know, ĎIf Iím faithful, Godís going to take care of me,íĒ Buttigieg said. ďAnd I guess what I would hope that they might consider is that maybe a vaccine is part of Godís plan for how youíre going to take care of yourself.Ē

Buttigieg acknowledged during the exchange on CNN that his opinion on the matter may not sway many white evangelicals, and he urged faith leaders to speak out in support of vaccines.

1. Reminds me of the joke

A man sitting on his roof as the flood waters rise. A boat comes by and the people tell him to get in. He answers, "God will take care of me." After a bit, a helicopter hovers overhead and lowers a basket to him. The pilot uses the PA system to tell the man to get in the basket. He answers, "God will take care of me."

The flood waters continue to rise, and eventually, the man drowns. When he gets to the Pearly Gates he tells St. Peter, "I thought God would take care of me." St. Peter answers, "Didn't you see the boat? Didn't you see the helicopter?"

Signed, another Episcopalian.

46. Similar joke:

A man prays and prays for years for God to let him win the lottery.

Finally a thunderous voice with trumpets fills the air when the man is praying before bed, "Ralph. This is God. Either meet me halfway and buy a lottery ticket or stop asking."

21. Actually, Roman's 13 addresses this:

"Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God."

I've used that verse many a time with Republican friends. Of course, I've had it fired back at every a few times, too, lol

45. Yes! White evangelicals bleated incessantly that God put Trump in the White House.

If everything happens according to Godís will, then why do evangelicals try to impose their will on everything that happens, as in believing that Biden did not win the election?

That is so much the hypocrisy that I see in Republicans and their white evangelical supporters. Itís Godís will when they agree with the results. Itís cheating by progressives and liberals when they do not.

He grew up and lived in South Bend Indiana, where lots of religious groups are all around there. Even a lot of Amish living in that state. So he knows how to talk to them.

So sad that the science alone - which is, after all, reality - is not enough of a bludgeon to use when it comes to people getting vaccinated.

Or to socially distance, but if someone is too stubborn, stupid, ignorant, defiant, or whatever other adjective you want to use, I say screw 'em. I'm not sure I want them getting vaccinated. Let them improve the gene pool by leaving it.

10. What these people are saying is that the faithful will not get sick from the Covid virus.

All they have to do is truly believe that God will protect them, and they will be protected.
That's basically demanding that God intervene in a strictly biological process that has been around for millennia; the whole infectious disease thing which has killed many hundreds of millions of people for as far back as there are human records to record these things.
So, they test God. Good luck with that.
There is a phrase: "God helps those who help themselves".
You wouldn't walk out naked into a howling blizzard, expecting God to protect you from the cold, would you?
Why would you walk out unprotected (naked) into a pandemic and expect God to protect you?
It's pretty arrogant.
It also isn't going to work. Evangelicals get sick and die just like everyone else. It may be God's way of testing you; giving you what you need to see how spiritually mature you really are. Irrational belief in being so special that God will intervene just for you is a spiritually immature attitude. Pure and simple bull crap!

The Pope told them to get vaccinated. The Catholic church has plenty of other problems, to be sure, but they aren't pushing the antivax thing like the evilgelicals.

Why are you sticking up for a religion that allows for Mexican children being ripped from their parents arms, or a religion that is "ok" with the sexual abuse of children, or a Supreme Court that supports, the "devil"..Trump. Contact the Pope and have the Catholic Supreme Court justices excommunicate. Now!!
