Pete Buttigieg To Reluctant Evangelicals: 'Maybe A Vaccine Is Part Of God's Plan'
Source: Huffington Post
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Sunday encouraged evangelical Christians who are reluctant to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to consider that the shots might be a part of Gods plan.
State of the Union host Jake Tapper asked Buttigieg, an Episcopalian, about the large portion of white evangelicals who say they wont get a COVID-19 vaccine. About 40% of white evangelical Protestants said they likely would not get vaccinated, according to a poll conducted last month, compared to about 25% of all Americans, 28% of white mainline Protestants and 27% of Protestants who are not white.
Ive heard people I care about saying, you know, If Im faithful, Gods going to take care of me, Buttigieg said. And I guess what I would hope that they might consider is that maybe a vaccine is part of Gods plan for how youre going to take care of yourself.
Buttigieg acknowledged during the exchange on CNN that his opinion on the matter may not sway many white evangelicals, and he urged faith leaders to speak out in support of vaccines.

(46,039 posts)A man sitting on his roof as the flood waters rise. A boat comes by and the people tell him to get in. He answers, "God will take care of me." After a bit, a helicopter hovers overhead and lowers a basket to him. The pilot uses the PA system to tell the man to get in the basket. He answers, "God will take care of me."
The flood waters continue to rise, and eventually, the man drowns. When he gets to the Pearly Gates he tells St. Peter, "I thought God would take care of me." St. Peter answers, "Didn't you see the boat? Didn't you see the helicopter?"
Signed, another Episcopalian.

(9,981 posts)If everything happens according to Gods will, then why do evangelicals try to impose their will on everything that happens, as in believing that Biden did not win the election?
That is so much the hypocrisy that I see in Republicans and their white evangelical supporters. Its Gods will when they agree with the results. Its cheating by progressives and liberals when they do not.

(6,172 posts)All they have to do is truly believe that God will protect them, and they will be protected.
That's basically demanding that God intervene in a strictly biological process that has been around for millennia; the whole infectious disease thing which has killed many hundreds of millions of people for as far back as there are human records to record these things.
So, they test God. Good luck with that.
There is a phrase: "God helps those who help themselves".
You wouldn't walk out naked into a howling blizzard, expecting God to protect you from the cold, would you?
Why would you walk out unprotected (naked) into a pandemic and expect God to protect you?
It's pretty arrogant.
It also isn't going to work. Evangelicals get sick and die just like everyone else. It may be God's way of testing you; giving you what you need to see how spiritually mature you really are. Irrational belief in being so special that God will intervene just for you is a spiritually immature attitude. Pure and simple bull crap!

(115,683 posts)And don't we have a First Amendment that allows people to practice whatever religion they choose?
Mary in S. Carolina
(1,364 posts)We have our 1st Amendment rights too ....I have a right to boycott the Catholic religion!!! Why are you sticking up for a religion that allows for Mexican children being ripped from their parents arms, or a religion that is "ok" with the sexual abuse of children, or a Supreme Court that supports, the "devil"..Trump. Contact the Pope and have the Catholic Supreme Court justices excommunicate. Now!!
Ocelot II
(115,683 posts)contacting the Pope and urging him to excommunicate people we don't like just isn't going to happen. You can boycott any church you want. Joe Biden is Catholic, too, btw. Should he be excommunicated as well?
