Andrew Brown Jr. shot five times, once in back of head, according to family-backed autopsy

Source: NBC News

The Black man who died during an attempted arrest in North Carolina last week was shot five times, including once in the back of the head, his family said Tuesday.

Relatives of Andrew Brown Jr., 42, are questioning why Pasquotank County Sheriff's deputies used deadly force while serving a warrant for his arrest on felony drug charges on Wednesday.

The family commissioned forensic pathologist Dr. Brent Hall, who found that Brown was shot four times in the right arm and once squarely in the back of his head.

That head shot was fired from "intermediate" range and penetrated Brown's skull and brain, according to Hall, who is based in Boone, North Carolina.

A search warrant for drugs went right to his killing, which officer all of a sudden felt he was a deadly threat? Evidently he was known to law enforcement before this.

Did these results differ from the county results?

Was there a reason for the family and their lawyers to commission a second autopsy?

10. Here we are America. A militarized police force using lethal force routinely. Not going to be easy

to make significant and needed changes. I really empathize with POC who have to put up with being profiled and targeted. The veneer has been stripped off the open wound which largely centers around systemic racism. I guess that is the first step. Second is acknowledging you have a problem and having enough support to implement any change. Same with any meaningful gun control measures. Some folks won't agree there is a problem at all, in either case.

13. Sheriff Releases Names of Deputies Involved in Andrew Brown's Shooting

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C.—The Pasquotank County Sheriff released the names of three deputies who fired their weapons during last week’s fatal shooting of Andrew Brown Jr. and said they would remain on administrative leave pending further investigation.

Four other deputies who were put on leave after the shooting returned to active duty, Sheriff Tommy Wooten said Thursday.

Mr. Brown, a 42-year-old Black man, was shot five times on April 21 by deputies as they attempted to serve drug-related search and arrest warrants, authorities said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has opened a civil-rights investigation into the shooting.

“After carefully examining the body camera footage of the incident with my own staff, it’s obvious that four of the deputies never fired their weapons and deserve to be reinstated,” Sheriff Wooten said in a news release.
