Voting: Florida House passes controversial bill that would add restrictions

Source: CNN

After several hours of contentious debate, the Republican-controlled Florida House passed its version of a controversial bill that would add new restrictions to the voting process.

The bill, SB 90, passed on a party-line vote of 77-40 on Wednesday. The bill now goes back to the Senate with a slew of changes, after the House adopted a "strike-all amendment" that brought SB 90 closer to a similar bill that had been moving through the House.

The legislation, as amended by the Florida House, would create a long list of restrictions, including:

Adding new identification and signature requirements for voting by mail.

and others got involved. Rather than having to send in copies of driver license or state IDs, we can now just put the numbers on the envelope.

More importantly, people without those IDs can just enter the last 4 digits of their Social Security #. Hope Florida ends up there. There are some other aspects that could be problematic, though.

Make election day an official holiday or excused absence for every Federal worker and mandate it for companies who are Federal contractors.

I hope something can be done at the federal level to reverse this. I don't mind the rules on a personal level, I'll do whatever I have to do to make sure that my vote counts, but I'm sure that many will just take the stance that "it's too difficult to vote, so why bother". I'd imagine that's why they're doing it.

I'm not sure what not allowing private donations for elections means. I'd like to know a little more about that. Are they no longer allowing private citizens to donate to candidates?

"protesting" about the right to vote, but if some "protester" has a gun to defend themselves from someone trying to run them over .........
